MP3002

Hints:
• To do this problem, you need to recognize this system as an undamped system.
• Set a starting point, so that you can get initial conditions
• Then sub them into the general equation of motion for an undamped system.
Solution:
• General Equation:
o where

• To find the initial conditions, use the Law of Conservation of Momentum to form
an equation that equates the the state m2 is in before contact with m1, and the
state of both weights after contact.
• When forming the momentum equation. you will find the need to obtain the
velocity of the m2 before it contacts m1. To obtain this, apply the Law of
Conversation of Energy. Equate the state of m2’s potential energy at height h and
its corresponding kinetic energy .
• For the natural frequency, we are looking at the system after impact. Which means
the equivalent mass is the mass of the 2 masses

Tutorial 2 – Damped Motion and Harmonic Motion

Hints:
 Find out what type of damping this system is undergoing.
 Write out the general formula of motion for the type of damping this system is undergoing.

 Find the maximum displacement by differentiating the equation and equating it to 0.

• Solution:
1. Damping ratio is
o Where
2. We find that the damping ratio is less than one, making it an underdamped
system.
o So equation of
motion will
be:
o Where:
3. Now find the maximum x, by differentiating the equation of motion and
equating it to zero.

Hint:
 use the 2 initial conditions to find out the constants for the solution of the differential equations.
 . Notice that when x = 0.4, x’ = 0. This will give an additional condition to work out the time for
the barrel to recoil 0.4m.

Solution:

1. m = 500kg
2. k = 10000N/m

3. ωn = √(k/m) = 4.47rad/s
4. Cc = 2√(km) = 2√(500 × 1000) = 4472Ns/m

5. Since x = (A + Bt)exp(-ωnt)
6. At time equals to 0, x = 0
7. Thus (A + Bt)exp(-ωnt) = 0
a. A = 0

8. Also x’ = -ωn A exp(-ωnt) - Btωn exp(-ωnt) + Bexp(-ωnt)

9. At time equals to 0, x’ = xo’
10. Thus Bexp(-ωnt) = xo’
11. B = xo’

12. There for when x = 0.4, x’ = 0

a. xo’texp(-ωnt) = 0.4
b. -xo’tωn exp(-ωnt) + xo’exp(-ωnt) = 0
13. Thus t = 1/ωn = 0.224s

• The cantilever beam can be modeled as a mass-spring system as below:

keq
m

m + meq
x

Therefore, the natural frequency of the beam will be simply be .

Solution:
• Since me is still unknown, we ignore the lump mass m(which is already given)
and apply integration throughout the whole length of the beam to find its K.E.

Hint:
• Write out energy equations and observe equation.
Solution:
• Calculate equivalent mass from kinetic energy
• KE = 1/2 (m1X ’2 + J2θ2’ 2 + J3θ2’ 2)
• = 1/2 (m1X ’2 + J2 (X ’/r2)2 + J3 (X ’/r3)2)

• = 1/2 (m1 + J2/r2 + J2/r22 + J3/r32) X ’2

• THEREFORE

• Meq = m1 + J2/r2 + J2/r22 + J3/r32

• Calculate equivalent stiffness from strain energy

• SE = 1/2 k1X2 + 1/2 k3θ2

• = 1/2 k1X2 + 1/2 k3(X/r3)2

• =1/2 (k1 + k3/r32) X2

• THEREFORE
• Keq = k1 + k3/r32
