Chapter 12: Data Handling

Pie Chart
Example (How to Construct a Pie Chart)

The table shows the favourite fruit juice of 40 students in a class.

Juice Mango Orange Apple Others

Frequency 15 10 7 8

Represent the above data using a pie chart.

Solution
1. Calculate the angle of sector for each components.
15 10 7 8
Mango = x 360° Orange = x 360° Apple = x 360° Others = x 360°
40 40 40 40
= 135° = 90° =63° = 72°

2. Write the title of Pie Chart.

3. Using a pair of compasses, draw a circle.
4. Using a ruler, draw a straight line from the center of the circle.
5. Using a protractor, measure the angle for each sector.
6. Label each of the sector

Grades of Eggs

Grade B Grade A

120° x

90°

Grade C

The Pie Chart shows the distributions of grades of eggs sold in a shop. 140 of eggs are of grade B.
Find
(a) the value of x,
x = 360° - 120° - 90°
= 150°
(b) the total number of eggs,
ratio 120° : 360°
exact value 140 : y

120 140
x
360 y
120y = 140 x 360
140 x 360
y=
120

y = 420 ∴ Total number of eggs= 420

(c) the difference between the number of eggs of grade A and grade C.

Difference between angles: 150° – 90° = 60°

140
120
x 60° = 70 ∴ Difference between number of eggs of Grade A and Grade C = 70
