Section B - Statistics
Attempt all questions. All three questions in this section are each worth 20 marks in total.
11. Emails arrive in my mailbox according to a Poisson Process of rate 5 per hour.
(a)_Eind_the_probability_that between 4:30 pm and 5 pm this afternoon, exactly 3 email
messages will arrive in my mailbox. [3 marks]
(b) Find the probability that the time between the arrival of one particular email and the
next one is longer than 10 minutes. [3 marks]
Suppose that each incoming email has a probability of 0.4 of being SPAM, independently of
all other emails.
(c) Find the probability that amongst the next 10 emails, there will be exactly 3 SPAM
emails. [2 marks]
(d) Find approximately the probability that amongst the next 50 emails, there will be more
than 25 SPAM emails. [5 marks]
Suppose now that a filter classifies each incoming email as either "junk" or "not junk",
independently of all other emails. Emails classified as "junk" are automatically moved to a
junk folder. Assume that SPAM emails have a probability of 0.7 of being (correctly) classified
as "junk", whereas genuine emails (i.e. emails that are not SPAM) have a probability of 0.1
of being (incorrectly) classified as "junk".
(e) Find the probability that the next incoming email will be classified incorrectly. [2 marks]
(f) Suppose that I do not check the contents of my junk folder until it contains 100 emails.
How many genuine emails should I expect to find amongst these. [5 marks]

12. (a) Suppose that all University of Poppleton telephone numbers consist of six digits, the
first three of which are 581. Assume that all possible sequences of the remaining three
digits are equally likely. Find the probabilities that a randomly selected University of
Poppleton telephone number
(i) contains exactly one 0; [3 marks]
(ii) consists of six distinct digits; [2 marks]
(iii) consists of six distinct digits, one of which is 0; [3 marks]
(iv) consists of six distinct digits or contains exactly one 0, but not both. [4 marks]
(v) contains exactly one 0, given that the phone number consists of six distinct digits.
[2 marks]
(b) A research group at the University consists of 7 professors and their 7 PhD students; each
professor is the supervisor of one PhD student. A committee of 4 people is selected at
random from amongst these 14 people, where each person is equally likely to be selected.
(i) Find the probability that the committee consists of 2 professors and 2 PhD students.
[3 marks]
(ii) Find the probability that the committee is made up of 2 PhD students and their
supervisors. [3 marks]
13. The Bloomsbury Tea Company sells tea in boxes of 200 tea bags. Assume that the weights
of the tea bags are independent random variables, all with the same distribution.
(a) State with a reason whether or not the total weight of all the tea bags in a box approxi-
mately follows a Normal distribution. [2 marks]
(b) The weight of tea in a box is stated on the packaging as 500g. A consumer organisation
decides to test whether this is a fair statement by weighing the amount of tea in each of
10 randomly sampled boxes produced by the Bloomsbury Tea Company. The following
results are obtained (weights in grams, rounded to the nearest g):
499, 489, 502, 498, 503, 493, 501, 506, 493, 498.
(i) Find the median and the upper and lower quartiles of these data. [3 marks]
(ii) Find the sample mean and the sample variance of these data. [3 marks]
(iii) Perform an appropriate statistical hypothesis test to assess, at a significance level
of 5%, whether these data provide significant evidence that the mean weight of tea
per box produced by the Bloomsbury Tea Company is less than 500g. State your
conclusion clearly. [6 marks]
(c) Suppose now that the weight of tea per tea bag has mean µl and standard deviation
0.5g, and that the value of µi can be adjusted in the factory by a dial on the machine
which fills the tea bags with tea. What should the value of p be if the Bloomsbury Tea
Company wants to ensure that 90% of boxes contain at least 500g of tea? [6 marks]
