Section B - Statistics

Attempt all questions. Each of the three questions in this section is worth 18 marks
in total.

You may use the following formula if required:

An Exponentially distributed random variable X with mean E(X) 1/A has probability
density function
f(x) = Ae- AX for x > o.

11. An online pharmacy sells a certain type of flu medication. Customers can order either 1 or
2 boxes of the flu medication; because of legal restrictions, orders of more than 2 boxes are
not allowed. Assume that the pharmacy receives orders for the flu medication according to
a Poisson Process of rate 4 per hour, and that each order is for 1 box with probability 0.2 or
for 2 boxes with probability 0.8, independently of all other orders.
(a) For a randomly sampled order of flu medication received by the pharmacy, denote by X
the number of boxes required. Find E(X) and Var(X). [2 marks]
(b) Let Y be the number of orders of flu medication received up to and including the first one
that only requires 1 box. Name the distribution of Y and find P(Y ~ 20). [2 marks]
(c) Let N be the number of orders of flu medication received during a time interval of 3
hours. Name the distribution of N and state its mean and variance. [3 marks]
(d) Let T be the time (in minutes) between one order of flu medication and the next. Name
the distribution of T and state its mean. Find P(5 < T < 10). [4 marks]
Suppose that, on a particular day, the pharmacy receives 100 orders of flu medication.
(e) Let R be the number of orders (out of these 100) that only require 1 box. Name the
distribution of R and find P(R = 20). [2 marks]
(f) Let S be the total number of boxes of flu medication required for these 100 orders. Find
the mean and variance of S. Approximately calculate P(S > 175). [5 marks]

12. (a) On weekdays, the 8:00 a.m. train from East Croydon to London Victoria is scheduled to
arrive at 8:20 a.m. To check whether the scheduled arrival time is accurate, the actual
arrival time of this train at London Victoria is recorded on 15 weekdays. The following
data are obtained (arrival times given as minutes after 8:00 a.m., rounded to the nearest
minute):
20, 25, 21, 19,22, 21, 20, 23, 20, 19, 29, 22, 20, 18, 21
(i) Find the median and the upper and lower quartiles of these data. [3 marks]
(ii) Calculate the sample mean and the sample variance. [3 marks]
(iii) Perform an appropriate statistical hypothesis test to assess, at a significance level of
5%, whether the data provide significant evidence that the true mean arrival time
of the train at London Victoria (on weekdays) is in fact later than 8:20 a.m. State
any assumptions that you make, and formulate your conclusion clearly. [8 marks]

(b) Suppose that the arrival time of a different train at London Victoria follows a Normal
distribution centred at 10:32 a.m. and with a standard deviation of 5 minutes. The
railway company wants to adjust the scheduled arrival time of this train in the online
train timetable. What is the earliest time (in hours and whole minutes) at which the
arrival of this train at London Victoria can be scheduled in the timetable, if the railway
company wants to ensure that the probability that the train arrives on time (i.e. at or
before this new scheduled arrival time) is at least 0.6? [4 marks]

13. (a) An experiment consists of randomly forming a sequence with the 10 letters
A, C, I, I, S, S, S, T, T, T
where all possible orders of these 10 letters are equally likely. Find the probability of
each of the following events (you may leave your answers in the form of fractions and/or
in factorial or combinatorial notation):
(i) the sequence starts and ends with a letter S; [2 marks]
(ii) the sequence starts or ends with S (or both); [3 marks]
(iii) the word 'STATISTICS' is obtained; [3 marks]
(iv) the sequence contains the word 'CAT'. [3 marks]

(b) A heavy container with chemical waste has been illegally dumped into the sea, and is
now lying in a fixed but unknown position on the bottom of the sea. The container
is believed to be situated in British territorial waters with probability 0.8. The Royal
Navy are planning a search through the British territorial waters only, to try to find the
container. If the container is situated in British territorial waters, then the probability
that it will be found by such a search is 0.7 (while the probability that it will be overlooked
is 0.3).
(i) Calculate the probability that the container will be discovered by this search through
the British territorial waters. [3 marks]
(ii) Suppose that this search through the British territorial waters turns out to be un
successful, i.e. the container is not found. Given this information, what is now the
probability that the container is situated in British territorial waters? (4 marks]
