BTS Combined Cabinets and Cabinet Groups Feature
Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

In heavy-traffic urban areas, telecom operators want to deploy a large-capacity BTS to reduce
the number of BTSs and to save the construction and maintenance costs of BTSs. The number
of TRXs that can be held by a single BTS cabinet, however, is limited. For example, a single
BTS3012 cabinet holds a maximum of 12 TRXs. This means that a single cabinet cannot meet
the requirements of telecom operators. To solve this problem, BTS combined cabinets and
cabinet groups can be used to increase the capacity. For example, two combined cabinets and
three cabinet groups of the BTS3012 support 72 TRXs.
BTS combined cabinets and cabinet groups are applicable to the areas where the traffic is heavy
and the construction and maintenance costs of BTSs are high.
When a single cabinet cannot meet the large capacity requirement, combined cabinets can be
used to expand the capacity. If combined cabinets still cannot meet the capacity requirement,
cabinet groups can be used to expand the capacity.
The BTS combined cabinets are multiple BTS cabinets of the same type that are connected
through the signal cables for combined cabinets. The BTS combined cabinets function as one
BTS. Among the combined cabinets, one cabinet provides transmission interfaces for the
combined cabinets and performs operation and maintenance (OM) on the combined cabinets.
This cabinet is called the main cabinet, and all the other cabinets are called extension cabinets.
The main control board in the main cabinet is connected to the BSC through a transmission
cable. The main control board receives the traffic signals, signaling, OM signals, and clock
synchronization signals from the transmission cable and then distributes the signals to the TRXs
in the main cabinet through the internal bus. Meanwhile, the main control board distributes the
signals to the TRXs in the extension cabinets through the signal cables for combined cabinets.
In this manner, the services and OM of all the TRXs in the combined cabinets are synchronized.
The BTS cabinet groups are multiple BTS combined cabinets that are connected through the
signal cables for cabinet groups. The BTS cabinet groups function as one BTS. Among the
cabinet groups, one cabinet group provides clock synchronization signals and OM signals for
all the cabinet groups. This cabinet group is called the main cabinet group, and all the other
cabinet groups are called extension cabinet groups. The main control board in the main cabinet
of the main cabinet group receives the traffic signals, signaling, OM signals, and clock
synchronization signals from the transmission cable. The main control board in the main cabinet
of each extension cabinet group, however, extracts only the traffic signals and signaling from
the transmission cable. The main control board in the main cabinet of each extension cabinet
group obtains the OM signals and clock synchronization signals from the main control board in
the main cabinet of the main cabinet group through the signal cables for cabinet groups. In this
manner, the services and OM of all the TRXs in the cabinet groups are synchronized.

3.1 Combined Cabinets and Cabinet Groups of the BTS3012

One BTS3012 cabinet supports a maximum of 12 TRXs. If a synchronous cell needs more than
12 TRXs, combined cabinets can be used. The BTS3012 supports a maximum of 2 combined
cabinets and 3 cabinet groups. The combined cabinets and cabinet groups of the BTS3012
support a maximum of 72 TRXs.

Implementation of Combined Cabinets

Figure 3-1 shows the connections of the BTS3012 combined cabinets. Among the combined
cabinets of the BTS3012, only the main cabinet needs to be configured with the DTMU. The
DTMU is connected to the BSC through a transmission cable and it receives the traffic signals,
signaling, OM signals, and clock synchronization signals from the transmission cable. The
DTMU, then, distributes the signals to the TRXs in the main cabinet through the internal bus.
Meanwhile, the DTMU distributes the signals to the TRXs in the extension cabinet through the
signals cables for combined cabinets. In this manner, the services and OM of all the TRXs in
the combined cabinets are synchronized.

Implementation of Cabinet Groups

Figure 3-2 shows the connections of the BTS3012 cabinet groups. The main cabinet in each
cabinet group needs to be configured with the DTMU. The DTMU in the main cabinet of the
main cabinet group receives the traffic signals, signaling, OM signals, and clock synchronization
signals from the transmission cable. The DTMU in the main cabinet of each extension cabinet
group, however, extracts only the traffic signals and signaling from the transmission cable. The
DTMU in the main cabinet of each extension cabinet group obtains the OM signals and clock

synchronization signals from the DTMU in the main cabinet of the main cabinet group through
the signal cables for cabinet groups. In this manner, the services and OM of all the TRXs in the
cabinet groups are synchronized.

3.2 Combined Cabinets and Cabinet Groups of the

BTS3006C
One BTS3006C cabinet supports a maximum of six TRXs. If a synchronous cell needs more
than six TRXs, combined cabinets can be used. The BTS3006C supports a maximum of six
combined cabinets and does not support cabinet groups. The combined cabinets of the
BTS3006C support a maximum of 36 TRXs.

The main control board in the BTS3006C is the DMCM, which has two SFP optical ports: SFP-
A and SFP-B. The two ports are used to connect combined cabinets. They can be used
interchangeably. For example, if cabinet 0 needs to be connected to cabinet 1 through an optical
cable, the optical cable can be connected to the SFP-A or SFP-B optical port of cabinet 1. As
one SFP optical port of cabinet 1 is connected to cabinet 0, the other SFP optical port of cabinet
1 can be connected to any SFP optical port of cabinet 2 if cabinet 1 needs to be connected to
cabinet 2.

In the case of combined cabinets, the hardware configuration of the BTS3006C main cabinet is
the same as that of the BTS3006C extension cabinet. Both the main cabinet and the extension
cabinet are configured with the DMCM. The settings of the DIP switches differentiate the main
cabinet from the extension cabinet.

The combined cabinets can use the chain topology or ring topology.

Implementation of the Combined Cabinets in the Chain Topology

Figure 3-3 shows the connections of the combined cabinets in the chain topology. Cabinet 0 is
the main cabinet. The DMCM in the main cabinet is connected to the BSC through a transmission
cable. The DMCM receives the traffic signals, signaling, OM signals, and clock synchronization
signals from the BSC and then distributes the signals to the TRXs in the main cabinet through
the internal bus. Meanwhile, the DMCM distributes the signals to the TRXs in the extension
cabinets through the signal cables for combined cabinets. In this manner, the services and OM
of all the TRXs in the combined cabinets are synchronized.

Implementation of the Combined Cabinets in the Ring Topology

Figure 3-4 shows the connections of the combined cabinets in the ring topology. The dual-ring
backup technology is adopted. In the ring topology, signals of combined cabinets are transmitted
on both the forward ring and the reverse ring. By default, signals are transmitted on the forward
ring in the following sequence: cabinet 0, cabinet 1, cabinet 2, cabinet 3, cabinet 4, and cabinet
5. When the transmission on the forward ring is disrupted, the forward ring is automatically
switched to the reverse ring and signals are transmitted on the reverse ring in the following
sequence: cabinet 0, cabinet 5, cabinet 4, cabinet 3, cabinet 2, and cabinet 1. For combined
cabinets, the ring topology is more reliable and robust than the chain topology.
Cabinet 0 is the main cabinet. The DMCM in the main cabinet is connected to the BSC through
a transmission cable. The DMCM receives the traffic signals, signaling, OM signals, and clock
synchronization signals from the BSC and then distributes the signals to the TRXs in the main
cabinet through the internal bus. Meanwhile, the DMCM distributes the signals to the TRXs in

combined cabinets and does not support cabinet groups. The combined cabinets of the
BTS3002E support a maximum of 12 TRXs.
The main control board in the BTS3002E is the DMCM, which has two SFP optical ports: SFP-
A and SFP-B. The two ports are used to connect combined cabinets. They can be used
interchangeably. For example, if cabinet 0 needs to be connected to cabinet 1 through an optical

one SFP optical port of cabinet 1 is connected to cabinet 0, the other SFP optical port of cabinet
1 can be connected to any SFP optical port of cabinet 2 if cabinet 1 needs to be connected to
cabinet 2.

the same as that of the BTS3002E extension cabinet.

Figure 3-5 shows the connections of the combined cabinets in the chain topology. Cabinet 0 is
the main cabinet. The DMCM in the main cabinet is connected to the BSC through a transmission
cable. The DMCM receives the traffic signals, signaling, OM signals, and clock synchronization
signals from the transmission cable and then distributes the signals to the TRXs in the main
cabinet through the internal bus. Meanwhile, the DMCM distributes the signals to the TRXs in
the extension cabinets through the signal cables for combined cabinets. In this manner, the
services and OM of all the TRXs in the combined cabinets are synchronized.

Implementation of the Combined Cabinets in the Ring Topology

Figure 3-6 shows the connections of the combined cabinets in the ring topology.

3.4 Hybrid Cabinet Groups of the BTS3012 and the BTS3X

The BTS3012, BTS30, and BTS312 can form hybrid cabinet groups. The cabinets in the main
cabinet group must be the BTS3012 cabinets. The cabinets in extension cabinet groups can be
the BTS30 or BTS312 cabinets. Figure 3-7 shows the connections between the BTS3012 main
cabinet group and two BTS30 extension cabinet groups. Figure 3-8 shows the connections
between the BTS3012 main cabinet group and two BTS312 extension cabinet groups. In the
hybrid cabinet groups of the BTS3012 and the BTS30, one extension cabinet group consists of
a maximum of 3 combined cabinets; therefore, the hybrid cabinet groups support a maximum
of 60 TRXs (one BTS30 cabinet supports a maximum of six TRXs). In the hybrid cabinet groups
of the BTS3012 and the BTS312, one extension cabinet group consists of a maximum of 2
combined cabinets; therefore, the hybrid cabinet groups support a maximum of 72 TRXs (one
BTS312 cabinet supports a maximum of 12 TRXs).
The characteristics and limitations of hybrid cabinet groups are as follows:
l Hybrid cabinet groups can have at most two types of cabinets. The cabinets in the main
cabinet group must be the BTS3012 cabinets. The cabinets in extension cabinet groups can
be the BTS30 or BTS312 cabinets.
l The TRXs in the cabinets of different types can be configured for one cell. The TRXs
serving one cell can be located in the hybrid BTS3012 and BTS30 cabinet groups or in the
hybrid BTS3012 and BTS312 cabinet groups.
l Cabinets of different types of BTSs can be configured as cabinet groups but cannot be
combined. That is, the BTS3012 cabinet cannot be combined with the BTS30 or BTS312
cabinet.
