HAND TOPOGRAPHY - CENTER PALMAR REGION

ADDUCTOR POLLICIS - fan shaped muscle

- located deep in the palm

1. Origin
a) Oblique head - anterior aspects of capitate bone and bases of 2 nd and 3rd metacarpal.
b) Transverse head - ridge of distal 2/3 of anterior surface of shaft of 3 rd metacarpal.

2. Insertion : medial side of the base of proximal phalanx of the thumb.

3. Vascularization : deep palmar arch

4. Innervation : Ulnar nerve (deep branch)

5. Action : adducts thumb (provides power to grip)

6. Relations deep palm arch & deep branch of Ulnar nerve pass between the 2 heads

superficial Flexor Pollicis Brevis

tendons of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus
Lumbricals

deep covers 2 interosseus spaces from which it is separated by a strong

aponeurosis
LUMBRICAL MUSCLES - 4 small slender m.m.

1. Origin :
 Lumbricals 1&2 -> lateral side of lateral 2 tendons of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus
 Lumbricals 3&4 -> adjacent sides of medial 3 tendons of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus

2. Insertion :
 1&2 -> lateral sides of extensor expansion of digits 2&3
 3&4 -> lateral sides of extensor expansion of digits 4&5

3. Vascularization : all superficial and deep palmar arches

4. Innervation :
 1&2 - Median nerve (digital branches)
 3&4 - Ulnar nerve (deep branch)

5. Action :
 Flex metacarpophalangeal joints
 Extend proximal and distal interphalangeal joints

6. Relations :
PALMAR INTEROSSEI - 4 small muscles

1. Origin :
 1st palmar interosseus -> medial side of base of the 1 st metacarpal
 2nd palmar interosseus -> medial 1/2 of the palmar aspect of 2 nd metacarpal
 3rd & 4th palmar interosseus -> lateral parts of the palmar aspects of the 4 th&5th metacarpals
shaft

2. Insertion :
 1st&2nd -> medial sides of the thumb and index fingers
 3rd&4th ->

3. Vascularization : deep palmar arch

4. Innervation : Ulnar nerve (deep branch)

5. Action :
 Adducts digits ( Palmar Adduct - PAD) towards axial line of hand.
 Flexes digits at MP joints and extend interphalangeal joints.

6. Relations :
