APPARATUS/ MATERIALS:
- Sodium hydroxide solution
- 1 moldm-3 hydrochloric acid
- Phenolphthalein
- 250cm3 conical flasks
- 50cm3 burette
- 150cm3 beakers
- 25cm3 measuring cylinders
METHOD:
1. Measure 10cm3 sodium hydroxide and place into each of the conical flasks.
2. Fill the burette with the 1M HCl.
3. Add 5 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the contents in the flask and swirl to make it coloured.
4. Titrate the contents in the flask with the acid in the burette. Add the acid a little at a time and swirl after
each addition.
5. Titrate until an colourless endpoint is achieved.
6. Take the reading on the burette at eye level and record.
7. Repeat the titration for the other flasks.

RESULTS:
CACULATIONS:
1. Find the volume of acid used in dm3. DO NOT FIND THE AVERAGE. JUST USE THE TOTAL OF
THE DIFFERENCE AND CONVERT TO dm3.
2. Find the number of moles of acid used.
3. Write an equation for the reaction taking place.
4. Find the number of moles of base used.
5. Find the molar concentration of the NaOH used in moldm-3.
6. Find the mass concentration of the NaOH used in gdm-3.
DISCUSSION: What is volumetric analysis used for? Explain the titration process carried out. What is the
function of the phenolphthalein?
