Question 1a (word count: 484 )

Your answer:
In order to ensure the collection of quality data from UNSW, UNSW must consider what are the
characteristics of quality data. These characteristics include the data being, accurate, timely, relevant, just
barely sufficient and worth its cost. The data UNSW that may be taken from the student includes the
collection of personal information.

To ensure UNSW collects quality data they must define what they want to use the data for and what type of
data must be collected for the objective. Once UNSW defines what they would like to use the data for it
allows for UNSW to collect relevant data, which is on step to ensuring quality data. The collection of data
on the personal information on students may be used by UNSW for “legitimate functions and activities of
the University”. This includes enrolment, student services, the delivery of academic programs as well as
extra-curricular, and supports UNSW’s planning and quality improvement activities. Things such as
enrolment and UNSW’s planning and quality improvement activities will require UNSW to collect quality in
their data. UNSW also conducts data analysis in order to improve services such as the student services,
student recruitment activities as well as improving the University’s marketing. Once UNSW has defined the
use for data, it must ensure that the data collected is collected within recent years, is accurate, relevant,
sufficient and worth its cost.

Another step towards quality data is accuracy. As UNSW collects mostly personal data from students such
as name, date of birth, contact details, address as well as student ID. It is important that the information
received is accurate. This can be achieved through UNSW asking students to provide a secondary form of
identification to ensure that quality data is being received. The quality of the data received is important for
things such as financial aid especially during a pandemic like COVID-19. Having the correct data will allow
for UNSW to access students for their eligibility for financial aid. It also provides them an easier time to get
into contact with students. The collection of personal data is also relevant in the aspect that it can also be
used for other business functions. It allows for UNSW to link student ID to marks as well as what the
student is studying. This ensures the correct amount of HECS is given to the students as well as assist the
University in any data analysis in order to improve the University.

The final 2 steps in ensuring quality data is achieved by UNSW is if the data is just barely sufficient and
worth its cost. UNSW must ensure the data is just barley sufficient. This can be achieved by only collecting
data on only UNSW students and not students at other universities. The cost of information of the personal
information of UNSW students is high in value as it may assist the university in improving as well as
increase profits.
