Jakarta – when the government
announced the liquidation of 16 banks last
Saturday, many people are surprised as they
did not expect their bank to be on the list.
Others were still trying to come to terms
with the fact that they had lost their jobs.
“I heard on the radio that 16 banks
were liquidated, that’s why came here, to
check whether I could still withdraw my
money,” said Prapto, who claimed to have a
deposit in one of the liquidated banks on Jl.
Thamrin. But he said he could’t get it as it
was Saturday and most banks do not open
then.
The headquarters of some of the
liquidated banks, such as bank Pacific and
Bank Industry looked calm, with only a few
people coming and going. Several people
called the ;Observer’ last Saturday
afternoon to find out which banks had been
liquidated.
I Nyoman Moena, a noted banking
analyst told the ‘Observer’ it is a normal
reaction for people to panic when hearing
such things, but, he said, the government
must certainly have anticipated the
situation. “I think the monetary authority
must have been prepared this time after the
announcement of the liquidation of Bank
Summa in 1992,” Moena said referring to
the guarantee by government to pay
depositors in two weeks on November, 13,
1997 and the naming of the banks that will
handle the pay outs.
When announcing the liquidations
last Saturday, Bank Indonesia assured
depositors they would get their money back.
Those who had less than Rp. 20 million
would get all their money on November 13,
while those who had over Rp. 20 million
would get up to Rp. 20 million in the first
stage with the remainder being paid later.

Harry Rachmadi said yesterday that the
liquidation of sixteen banks would certainly
have an impact in the community, as some
people may lose their jobs. To minimize the
impact of the liquidations, is is important to
accelerate the process. Rachmadi said that the

Indonesian banks. “Bank owners can no longer
do as they want when operating their own
banks,” he said. He also said that some

Smoking
A survey has found about 13 percent of
first-time smokers in the country are junior
high school students. It also revealed 89 percent
of young female employees were smokers.
The survey was conducted in five major
cities across the country, including Surakarta in

BANDUNG: Thousands of people who had
fled from their houses located on the slopes
of smouldering Mount Gankonora on
Halmahera Island, North Maluku, could
return to their homes after the authorities
downgraded the volcano's top-alert status,
Monday.
          The head of the Volcanology Center
and Geology Disaster and  Mitigation
Agency, Surono, said that the returning
residents still could not get within three
kilometers area of the volcano in Ibu
district, West Halmahera regency.
           The alert status for the volcano was
downgraded because the volcano had shown
less volcanic activity. Since July 10 to July
15, only small tectonic quakes measuring 2
0f the Rich ter scale were recorded in the
mountain and the volcano did not burst out
hot lava or other  volcanic materials from its
crater.
        "Compared to the last Monda's
explosion, wherein the ash spewed was 4,000
above the crater, it is now only about 10
meters high", Surono told the journalist in
Bandung on Monday.
        Following the volcano's increased
activity last week, which led authorities to
put it in the top alert status, around 10,000
residents were sheltered  in South Ibu and
Central Ibu districts.
        Surono warned the people not to get close
to the volcano because small emissions of smoke
could throw materials from the volcano's
crater.
         The 1.635-meter volcano has erupted 12

Surabaya's Juanda International
Airport has won the Culture and Tourism
Ministry's 2009 toilet award, beating out 2007
winner Denpasar's Ngurah Rai Airport, which
now drops to fourth. Indonesia's main gateway,
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, just
outside Jakarta, moves up from fourth in 2007
to second, in the biennial "Sapta Pesona Clean
Public Toilet Award".
The award was first handed out in 2007,

completed their seven-hour medical check-up
on Monday afternoon as part of requirement to
contest the July 8 residential election.
The pair is thus the last candidate couple
having their health screened at RSPAD Gatot
Subroto army hospital after Jusuf Kalla-
Wiranto and Megawati Soekarnoputri-
Prabowo Subianto had theirs earlier on
Sunday.
"I consider this as a quite heavy test. We
undergo almost seven hours of detailed and in-
depth check-up, including on our mental
health. We are now waiting for the result and
hope we can pass the test," Yudhoyono told
reporters after completing his medical check-

of smouldering Mount Gamkonora on

UN: Indonesia records 117th human case of
Bird flu

another human case of the H5N1 strain of
bird flu, raising its world-leading total to
117 cases, according to the World Health
Organization.
The agency said Friday night that the

January 4 with symptoms of the disease. It
said the strain had been confirmed as H5N1.

UN: Indonesia records 117th human case of
Bird flu
Geneva ( AP ) : Indonesia has recorded
another human case of the H5N1 strain of
bird flu, raising its world-leading total to
117 cases, according to the World Health
Organization.
The agency said Friday night that the
Indonesian Health Ministry has reported
that a 16 year old girl from West Java
Province has been hospitalized since
January 4 with symptoms of the disease. It
said the strain had been confirmed as H5N1.
Of the total number of human cases
in Indonesia, 94 have been fatal. WHO says
that globally 349 people have been infected
with H5N1 since the 2003 outbreak of the
disease. Of those, 216 have died.

An Indonesian migrant worker Munti Binti
Bani has died on Monday after being
hospitalized for several days due to alleged
torture by her employees in Selangor,
Malaysia.
Antara state news agency has reported
that Munti had been treated at Tengku
Ampuan Rahimah hospital since last
Tuesday and died on Monday at 10 a.m,
local time. Munti was found unconscious
with her hands and feet were tied in a
bathroom in Taman Sentosa housing
complex last Tuesday. She was suffering
from major wounds on her body and had
apparently been beaten with iron.

On Thursday a search-and-rescue team
found three more victims from a ship that sank
in the Banda Sea. They had been missing since
the accident occurred on Friday last week. They
were Aris Triono, the captain of the Amami
Cargo ship, Yakub, a crew-man, and Suharto, a
passenger.
They were found on Thursday floating
in waters close to Menui Island, Central
Sulawesi province. The province is adjacent to
the southeast Sulawesi province and the Banda
Sea.
Two other victims were earlier saved by the
SAR team in the Banda Sea on Saturday last
week, only a day after the ship sank due to bad
weather.
 The SAR team is still searching for
ten crew members and a passenger still
missing from the incident, said Rocky
Asikin, the head of Kendari SAR team.
Actress and model Cindy Maroon has
been banned from visiting Tom who has
been sentenced 15-year jail in an island
prison, on Thursday.
The head of the Central Java Justice
and Human Rights Office, Marsono banned
her visit after hearing with members of

the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the
naval base of Shkotovo 22, near
Vladivostock.
The accident, which occurred 13 months
before the Chernobyl disaster, spread

explosion was in the reactor of the Victor
Submarine. It was said to be a ‘thermal’ and
not nuclear explosion. Those involved in the

Seven people were killed in a collision

between a bus, a car and a truck on Jalan
Sultan at 10:35 p.m. last night. The dead
were all passengers of the car. The police
believed the car had been trying to overtake
the bus when it was struck by a truck
coming from the opposite direction. The
driver of the car might not be using his
lights, as the truck driver said he did not see
the car approaching.

The police said the car should not have tried

to pass the bus, since overtaking is not
allowed on Jalan Sultan. In addition, the
police reported that the car, a small

TANKER FIRE IN SUEZ
An accident occurred on the Japanese
M.V. Hoshibo in the Suez Canal last night.
It is expected that the Canal will be
closed to shipping for at least a week until
the Hoshibo, which is out of control and
blocking the Canal, can be towed away. The
bow of the ship has, in fact, swung around and
is resting against the banks of the Canal.
The Hoshibo, one of the world’s largest

Most Firms Ignore Waste Treatment
Only 26 percent of a total of 2,173 medium and
large-scale enterprises in the city regularly
submit samples of their liquid waste for
assessment, the Jakarta Environmental
Management Agency has said.
The remaining 1,602 enterprises failed to
deliver reports of the liquid waste they
produced as set out in gubernatorial decree No.
299/1996.The decree requires all enterprises
producing liquid waste to treat the waste before
disposing of it into rivers. It also requires firms
to send samples of the treated waste to the
agency every three months.
The companies on the list include hotels,
apartments, office buildings, restaurants,
hospitals, and industrial plants.
The above figures do not include registered
small-scale enterprises such as community
markets, small workshops and small offices
which amount up to at least, 15,845
concerns.
Worse still, out of 571 companies which have
sent their samples to us, only 35 percent, or
199 companies, comply with the decree and
send us the samples every three months. The
rest submit the samples every four months,
six months, or even only once a year. No
wonder the quality of our river water is
getting worse. High levels of pollution in the
city's 13 rivers is suspected of being behind
the red tide phenomenon, which killed
thousands of fish in Jakarta Bay in May.
The real issue here is whether the agency
has the political will because the adminis
tration has ignored the existing Law No.
23/1997 on the environment. The law
authorises all environment management
agencies to control the liquid waste
treatment of any enterprises. The law gave
the administration the power to censure
transgressing companies and the city could
close companies down if they continue to
ignore existing regulations.
The law says companies found to be
polluting the environment with liquid waste
are given six months to improve their
treatment facilities. If they fail to meet the
deadline, the agency has the power to close
the waste treatment facility, the area of
production causing the waste, or the entire
production process.

World’s Oldest Person Dies Aged 115
The oldest person in the world has died in her
sleep at the age of 115. Ms. Gertrude Baines
from the USA had held the title for most of this
year. She became the world’s oldest person in
