Chapter 6: Claims Assignment

1. Why would a claim of fact need to be proven?

A claim of fact makes an assertion about something with factual proof that can be
proven or disproved. The fundamental quality of the claims must, however, be debatable and
offer an assertion about a problem. So, for a logical argument, a statement of fact can not
simply consist of a statistical or proven fact. Instead, it needs to concentrate on an assertion that
uses facts to support it, but for which the proof could still be debatable.

2. What claim is Levs making in his essay "Loaded Language Poisons Gun Debate?

The claim of fact in this essay relates to the inherent difficulty of understanding each
other first and finding a common space on either side of the gun control debate.

3. What is a claim of value?

A claim of value argues that something is either good or bad, or that one thing is better
than another.

4. What claim is Chi making in his essay "The NFL's Protest Crisis"?

He claimed that he could not stand for the flag while the police are murdering civilians 
and getting away with it. He also displayed his disdain for law enforcement by wearing socks
featuring pigs in police hats during practice.

Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

I disagree with him because this is not a free speech issue as many of Kaepernick's
supporters have claimed it to be. If Kaepernick made disparaging remarks about gays, minorities
or any ethnic group, he would have been fined and/or suspended.

5. What is a claim of policy?

A claim of policy argues that certain conditions should exist, or that something should or
should not be done, in order to solve a problem.

6. What is Ventura's claim of policy in "Your Toxic Beauty Regime"?

 Ventura claims the beauty industry are putting chemicals in the products to sell to the
masses and doesn’t care if it kills them. So, we as consumers need to be aware of ingredients used
in our beauty routine to protect ourselves. Consumers need to be aware of everyday items we use
for personal hygiene. She brings out the fact that major health problems are linked to many
ingredients that are used to prevent acne and rashes.
