HISTORY OF BARANGAY DON PEDRO

Sugar is sweet, but it’s never sorry for the rot in your teeth.

Pedro Rodríguez y Lazala (1869 – October 25, 1932), also known as Nyoy Endong and the Grand Old Man of Bogo was a Filipino politician. He served as

Presidente Municipal of Bogo, Cebu and was one of the first members of the Filipino House of Representatives during the presidency of Emilio Aguinaldo.

Rodríguez was born in Medellin, Cebu and he attended the seminary of San Carlos and proceeded to the Ateneo de Manila where he graduated with a B.S.

in Agricultural Engineering.[1] He came from wealthy Bogo family with extensive landholdings in the northern sugar-belt towns of the province.[2] Rodríguez was

appointed as Municipal President of Bogo between 1898 until 1903.[1] In 1905, he went to Spain as a delegate of the Philippine Assembly. In 1907, his brother,

Celestino Rodríguez became senator deputised in the district. During his administration, he was part and given the leadership at the Inauguration of

Independence held at the Old Plaza in Cebu, he said: "In our world, there are two respected mountains, namely Mount Sinai and Mount Sudlong. But the Filipinos

love most Mount Sudlong because on its top… is where the first Philippine flag was raised in the skies of Cebu… where blood of our brothers spilled to fight for

our country…" His high achievement as senator enabled him to become a member of the Nacionalista Party and he also served as a Senatorial District governor.

Two streets and a barangay in Bogo were named after him.

INTRODUCTION
Violence against women is one factor in the growing wave of alarm about violence in the society. The term violence against women
has been used to describe a wide range of acts, including murder, rape and sexual assault, physical assault, emotional abuse, battering,
stalking, prostitution, genital mutilation, sexual harassment, and pornography. There is little consensus in the still evolving field on
exactly how to define violence against women. The major contention concerns whether to strictly define the word ''violence" or to think of
the phrase "violence against women" more broadly as aggressive behaviors that adversely and disproportionately affect women.
Researchers in such fields as sociology and criminology tend to prefer definitions that narrowly define violence, definitions that can be
operationalized.

Moreover, in the Philippines Violence Against Women is "the word or concept (that) has been used in a broad, inclusive manner to
encompass verbal abuse, intimidation, physical harassment, homicide, sexual assault, and rape (of women in particular)." This form of
violence is gender-biased. Violence occurs precisely because of their gender, specifically because the victims are women. According to
the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey, one in every four (or 26%) ever-married women aged 15–49 had ever experienced
physical, sexual or emotional violence by their husband or partner. Additionally, one in five (20%) women had reported ever experiencing
emotional violence, 14% had ever experienced physical violence, and 5% had ever experienced sexual violence by their current or most
recent husband or partner.

In addition, in Cebu area Quoting data from the Philippine National Police (PNP), the GAA said at least 2,183 cases of violence against
women and 2,077 cases of violence from the start of the quarantine controls last March until early this June 2020. “Child-focused groups
are receiving more and more reports of harassment and sex trafficking on social media, with many online perpetrators even promising
„lifetime membership‟ and „exclusive access‟ to child sexual abuse photos and videos,” the GAA said. “According to data gathered by the
Philippine Commission on Women, the reported gender-based violence incidents include violations of the Anti-Rape Law, Anti-Violence
Against Women and their Children Act, Articles No. 334 and 336 of the Revised Penal Code, Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act, Anti-
Trafficking in Persons Act, Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, and Safe Spaces Act,” it added. The GAA added said it was also alarmed by the
possibility that the reported number might not reflect the extent of the abuses yet.

As we conducted a survey in Barangay Don Pedro, we interviewed our Barangay Captain Edilberto Sanchez and his subordinates
which are incharge of such cases. We came up with information‟s that unfortunately there are victims of battered wife and teenage
pregnancy in such place. As Hon. Helen Valdez, the one who is incharge of the VAWC‟s issue, disclosed to us that there two victims of
battered wife reported in our area. Moreover there are seven teenage pregnancy reported in our Barangay, ages range at 19 year old
under, of the year 2020 whom exposed by our Barangay midwife Miss Gaga Urot. In spite of those little recorded victims, our Barangay
officials are still very vigilant and kept on doing their best to prevent such issues again.

Furthermore, the Barangay officials and even SK officials held on assembly of awareness such as Teenage Pregnancy Awareness,
Addressing Domestic Violence against Women and Children, Drug Awareness Assembly. We conclude that Barangay Don Pedro Officials
are not being careless to their people. Instead, they are looking forward the betterment of their fellow Don Pedrohanons.
