Test of Unit 2
Paragraph 1 :
Before using a microscope, it’s better to consult the manufacturer’s manual. And although
different types of fluorescent microscpe, the principle remains the same.
Paragraph 2 :
Paragraph 3 :
Some precaution about danger of the mercury arc lamp and when it’s safe to check
mercury arc lamp.
Paragraph 4 :
Danger of rays of the mercury arc lamp if direct contact with our eyes..
Paragraph 5 :
The importance of ensuring barrier filters are in place when using a microscope.
“Use(s) of Microscope”
A microscope is a tool used to see objects that are too small to be seen with
the naked eye. To use the microscope itself, it is better if we consult with experienced
staff to avoid mistakes in its use. There are many types of microscopes, however they
share the same principles. It's just that it may differ in the operation section.
It is possible if the operation is different, but here all kinds of microscopes are tried to
generalize.
There are some precaution to protect ourself and other from the danger of mercury arc
lamps. First, don’t check the mercury arc lamp when it’s hot. When mercury arc lamp
hot, the inside pressure will increase to 8 atmosphere or 112 pounds per square inch.
Second, don’t expose our eyes to direct rays of the mercury arc lamp. Rays of
mercury arc lamp contain unfiltered light like ultraviolet and infrared light which are can
damaging our eyes.
Third, if you want to looking down through the microscope, ensure the barrier filter is
always in right place. The function of barrier filter is to prevent traces of ultraviolet light.
Resume
As in the case of most sophisticated equipment of this type, it is best to consult the
manufacturer's manual before using it. Remember that pressurized mercury arc lamp is
literally a potential bomb. Design of the equipment is such, however, that with good
judgment, no injury should result. Let it cool completely before opening up the lamp
housing.
Never expose your eyes to the direct rays of the mercury arc lamp. Equipment design is
such that the bulb is always shielded againts the scattering of its rays. Be sure that the
barrier filter is always in place when looking down through the microscope. Removal of
the barrier filter while looking through microscope could eye injury.
Answer : Before using a microscope, the best thing is consult the manufacturer’s manual.
Answer : Can damage the eyes and may cause eye injury
Answer : First, it’s can damage the eyes if the rays of the mercury arc lamp direct contact
with our eyes. And then may cause eye injury if the barrier filter is removed when looking
through a microscope.
Answer : Removal of the barrier filter while looking through microscope could get eye
injury.
8. Does the mercury arc lamp contain ultraviolet and infrared light?
Answer : Be sure the barrier filter is always in place when looking down through the
micrscope.
Paragraph 1 :
Paragraph 2 :
Alcohol can be used as a substitute for mercury. Alcohol is cheaper and can be used at
a lower temperature than mercury. Mercury thermometer in glass is included with the
Temperature Measurement Bench due to its stable and accurate performance. For
accurate temperature measurements using a liquid-filled thermometer, it is important that
the thermometer is immersed in the correct amount of the measured medium.
Resume
The most common type is the mercury-in-glass thermometer. Clean, dry mercury is
introduced and thermometer heated to drive off the air. The air is then sealed leaving
mercury and mercury vapor only. On heating, the mercury mercury expands relative to
the glass container and a column is pushed along the bore of the tube.
The mercury-in-glass thermometer is an accurate device but very fragile and care should
be exercised in used. This type of thermometer should not be used in applications such as
the food industry where mercury poisoning could occur in event of breakage. The
mercury may be replaced by other fluids according to the application. For example,
alcohol is cheaper and may be used at lower temperature than mercury.
Answer : The thermometer is immersed into the medium being measured by correct amount.
The depth of immersion is usually stated on the stem of thermometer and defined the
condition under which calibration is maintained
Answer : On heating.
Answer : No, it can’t. Because mercury poisoning could occur in event of breakage.
Answer : Because alcohol is cheaper and may be used at lower temperature than mercury.
