Differential Equations – Connecting rates of change/Forming differential equations – Sheet 1

Hint for q 9a – Find an equation for the circumference in terms of the radius.
Hint for 10 – write down an equation for the volume of a cube

Hint – you are given the formula for the volume and what you need to show – so what do you need to replace? Notice that you have similar
triangles in the diagram, so how else can you write the ratio of r/h ?
Hint for part a – first expand the brackets before differentiating. .

Differential Equations – Forming differential equations – Sheet 2

Hint – start with dV/dt = in – out and then rearrange into desired form.

Hint – a.) draw a diagram – use question 3 from the last sheet where there was an inverted conical funnel to help, this time your given an angle
to use instead of similar triangles so you can do a bit of SOHCAHTOA to get the volume as stated.

b.) You will need to connect the rate of change in h to the rate of change in V.

Differential Equations – Separation of Variables – Sheet 3

Hint for d – use index laws to write the exponential as the product of 2 separate exponentials.

Hints a – try to spot a derivative – or use a substitution.

b , c and d – separate, then rewrite the LHS as appropriate.

Hint – factorise LHS then separate the variables, can you spot a derivative on the LHS? If not, use a substitution.

Hint – Factorise the RHS and use index laws to split the LHS up, then separate the variables, write exponential on the RHS on the numerator
with a negative power. Spot a derivative on the LHS, use integration by parts on the RHS.

Differential Equations – In context – Sheet 4

Hint for part c – what happens in your equation is t is a large number?

Hint – separate the variables – you will need to use partial fractions on the LHS.

Hint – read the question carefully to construct the differential equation, separation of variables and use BOTH boundaries conditions to find the
proportionality constant and the constant of integration.

Hint – what is the difference in temperature between the tea and the room? What sign does dT/dt need to be? What does this tell you about k?

Hint for part b – divide top and bottom by t so that it only appears once and consider what will happen as t gets very large
Hint – dV/dt = in – out and connect the rates of change to get dh/dt

Hint for part a – write down a differential equation given that dR/dt = - kR (turning the sentence into an equation) , solve the equation.

b – this means that R = ½ Ro

c – this means that R = 1/10 Ro
