CHE 354-001 Chemical Reactor Design Homework #1

Spring 2021 Due 1/22/21

1. Given the reaction A + 3B → 2C + D, write the rate law, determine overall reaction
order, and give units of the rate constant (using mol, L, min units) for the reaction
assuming:
a. The reaction is an elementary reaction
b. The reaction is second order in A and first order in B
c. The reaction is second order in A and zeroth order in B
d. The reaction is and elementary reversible reaction (you don’t need to find the overall
order for this one, but you should find the units for KC)

2. Write the rate laws and give units for the rate constant (using mol, L, min units) for the
elementary reactions below. For reversible reactions, also give the units for KC.
a. A + B → C
b. A → B + C
c. A + 2B → C
d. A + 2B ↔ C
e. 3A + B ↔ 2C + 2D
f. 2A ↔ B
g. A ↔ 2B + C

3. The initial rate for the elementary reaction A + 2B → 3C in a constant-volume batch reactor
was measured as a function of temperature when the concentration of A was 1 M and that of
B was 2.5 M and reported in the table below.
-rA (mol/L/s) 0.00212 0.00717 0.0225 0.0657 0.180 0.466 1.14 2.67
T (°C) 25 35 45 55 65 75 85 95

a. What is the activation energy?

b. What is the frequency factor?
c. Write the rate constant as a function of temperature using T = 300 K as the base case.p

4. The gas-phase reaction A + B → C + D is carried out in a constant volume batch reactor. The
frequency factor for this reaction is 4 x 1015 L/mol/min. Plot kA vs. T for 100°C ≤ T ≤
1000°C if the activation energy is (a) 100 kJ/mol, (b) 500 kJ/mol, or (c) 1000 kJ/mol.
