CHE 354-001 Chemical Reactor Design Homework #4

Spring 2021 Due 2/19/21

1. The elementary, liquid-phase reaction A + B → 2C is to be carried out in a CSTR with feed
of CA0 = 16.13 mol/L and CB0 = 55.5 mol/L.
a. Set up a stoichiometric table.
b. Express the concentration as a function of conversion, evaluating all constants.
c. Write the reaction rate law solely as a function of conversion.

2. The isothermal, isobaric, catalytic gas-phase reaction A + 2B → C is to be carried out in a

fluidized CSTR. The feed is stoichiometric and enters at 6 atm and 170°C.
a. Set up a stoichiometric table.
b. Express the partial pressures of each gas as a function of conversion. Evaluate all
constants so that conversion is the only variable.
c. Write the rate law solely as a function of conversion, assuming the reaction follows an
elementary rate law.

3. The elementary gas-phase reversible reaction 2A + B ↔ C is to be carried out isothermally

with no pressure drop in a PFR with an equal molar feed of A and B, with CA0 = 2 mol/L. For
the operating conditions, kA = 2 L2/mol2·s and KC = 0.5 L2/mol2.
a. What is the concentration of B initially?
b. What is the limiting reactant?
c. Set up a stoichiometric table.
d. What is the exit concentration of B when the conversion of A is 25%?
e. Write -rA solely as a function of conversion.
f. What is the equilibrium conversion, Xe (what will conversion be when the reaction
reaches equilibrium)?
g. What is the rate when conversion is 0%, 50%, and 0.99Xe?

4. Optional bonus problem (3 pts extra credit): Fogler P4-2.
