CHE 354-001 Chemical Reactor Design Homework #8

Spring 2021 Due 3/22/21

1. The set of elementary, gas-phase reactions below are to be carried out in an isothermal
reactor. Data: k1A = 0.2 L/mol/min, k2B = 0.5 L/mol/min, k3E = 4 L2/mol2/min, K1C = 0.5,
K2C = 5, FA0 = 10 mol/L, FB0 = 15 mol/L, v0 = 2 L/min, α = 0.06 L-1.
A+B↔2C
B+C↔D+E
3E→F
a) Plot the molar flow rates and concentrations of each species of species A down the length
of a 25 L PFR.
b) Plot the conversion of species A and the pressure ratio (y) down the length of a 25 L
PFR.
c) Repeat parts a and b for a 25 L membrane reactor in which species C is allowed to diffuse
from the reactor with a diffusion constant of kC,C = 2 min-1.
d) Repeat part c, but with species D diffusing with a constant of kC,D = 2 min-1.
e) Compare the results from the three scenarios above. Discuss differences you observe.

2. Consider the set of liquid-phase series reactions A → 2 B → C. The first reaction is first
order, while the second reaction is second order. The rate constants at 25°C are k1 = 0.5 h-1
and k2 = 2 L/mol/h, while EA1 = 6.8 kcal/mol and EA2 = 0.6 kcal/mol. CA0 = 10 mol/L.

a. Plot the concentrations of each species in a 100 L batch reactor at 25°C and 80°C over 10
hours (assume the reaction is liquid phase at both temperatures).
b. What is the maximum concentration of species B at both temperatures?
c. At what time do you get the maximum concentration of B at both temperatures?

3. Optional bonus problem (3 pts extra credit): Fogler P8-2.
