AAVIN SCAM

“Punish Adulterators With Life Imprisonment”

An AIADMK functionary and a businessman from Tiruvallur were arrested by CB-

CID officials on Friday for allegedly masterminding the Aavin milk adulteration
racket exposed a month ago. Eight persons were arrested in connection with the
case. About 1,800 litres of milk in the 12,000-litre tanker was adulterated. Eight
persons were arrested in connection with the case. The arrest of former AIADMK
south Chennai district functionary Vaidyanathan threw more light on the issue.
Ramadoss said that according to reports Vaidyanathan owned two transport
companies and a total number of 104 tankers engaged in transporting milk from the
Aavin facilities in several districts. "The scam happened in all 17 zones and 2000
litres of milk had been stolen from each tanker. More than 2 lakh litres of milk was
stolen each day".

The initial estimate of the losses have been valued at one per cent of the total ten
lakh litres, amounting to ₹23 lakhs a day. The Vellore milk union stopped utilizing
the trucks and Aavin started procuring from Vellore using its own vehicles for
procurement. Farmer associations also demanded a CBI probe as the suspects were
operating in neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh. They also called for
streamlining the operation of the organization as it was deviating from the
guidelines specified by the National Dairy Development Board. The state minister
for dairy development, Moorthy, was stripped of his post in connection with the
scam on allegations that the prime accused, Vaidyanathan, was closely associated
with him.

Analysis:
 Principle of utilitarianism :
According to the principle of utilitarianism , adulteration of milk is
beneficial to few individuals, but the adulteration is harming the health of
public ,which is unethical. As the profits are done at the cost of mass,
therefore it is unethical.
 Principle of justice:
There are particular set of food standards which every food and drinks
company should follow but adulteration is prohibited according to standards
provided by the government, therefore it is unethical.
 Principle of caring :
Aavin has concrete relationship with customers, but adulteration is harming
the health of its customers, so principle of caring is also violated. So we can
say that the company officials are following the unethical way to increase
personal profit.

Keeping in mind the above principles we can say that although the procedures
being followed by the Vaidyanathan is providing benefits to the himself and some
other people but it is unethical in all respect as it is violating the set of standards
provided by the government and also harming the health of public. The state
minister for dairy development, Moorthy, was stripped of his post in connection
with the scam on allegations that the prime accused, Vaidyanathan, was closely
associated with him.
