This Specification defines the minimum requirements for the design, materials,
fabrication, inspection, testing and the preparation for shipment of unfired pressure
vessels.
‘As used in this Specification, the following definitions shall apply:
‘Company or Purchaser: UNOCAL THAILAND, LTD
VENDOR: Manufacturer/Supplier of Pressure Vessels
Pressure Vessels shall conform to ASME Section VIII Code requirements and this,
‘Specification in regards to material, welding and construction.
Alternatives, or additions to this Specification, shall be brought to the attention of
COMPANY in writing.
COMPANY shall be advised of any discrepancies between this Specification, the
Pressure Vessel Data Sheet(s) or drawings included in the Equipment Specifications
and shall decide disposition of same.
Pressure Vessels shall be code stamped per the criteria in Appendix 2 and unless
noted otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheets. For the Pressure Vessels
constructed without the ASME Code stamp, ASME Code forms shall be completed
and signed by the manufacturer and the Company approved inspector. Items on
the form pertaining to certificate of authorization and the inspection national board
‘number shall be left blank. A note shall be added to the form stating that the
‘equipment does not bear the ASME Code stamp.
2.0 CODES AND SPECIFICATIONS

The following codes shall be interpreted as the minimum requirements applicable to
the subject work, and no statement contained in this Specification shall be construed
as limiting the work to such minimum requirements. The latest editions of the codes
listed shall govern all work,

Specifications
The following COMPANY General Specifications (GS-Spec) shall be applied to the
‘subject work. In cases of conflict between the GS-Spec and any of the applicable
codes, the VENDOR shall immediately submit the matter in writing to COMPANY
who will prepare a written clarification.

3.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Pressure and Temperature

The design pressure and temperature shall be as specified on the Pressure
Vessel Data Sheet.
For vessels operating above 60°F, the maximum design temperature shall
Not be less than 25°F above maximum expected operating temperature.
For vessels operating below 60°F, the minimum design temperature shall not
be less than 10°F below minimum expected operating temperature.
The minimum differential between the design pressure and the maximum
anticipated operating pressure shall be 25 psi or 10% of the design pressure,
Whichever is greater. However, when high pressure alarm andior high
pressure shutdown devices are part of the operational design the minimum
differential shall be raised to 25 psi or 20% of the design pressure, whichever
is greater.
Pressure vessel subject to vacuum condition during normal operation, startup
or, shutdown shall be designed to full vacuum,
‘The Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) shall be based on the
actual metal thickness less intemal corrosion allowance and applicable mill
tolerance. The MAWP shall be limited by the shell, heads or flanges, not by

3.2. Wind, Seismic and Weight Loading
3.2.1. Vessels shall be self-supporting and designed to withstand wind load per GS-
18. Wind load shall be determined in accordance with ANSVASCE 7-88.
3.2.2. The wind load shall be applied to the vertical projection of the vessel
including insulation, ladders, platforms and attached appurtenances as listed
on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet.
3.2.3 The vessel supports shall be adequate for the design wind load with the
vessel at operating condition and shall be adequate for test conditions with
the vessel full of water without wind load.
3.2.4 The shelis of large diameter horizontal vessels shall have sufficient thickness
not to overstress at midspan and near saddle supports when (1) full of water
at hydrostatic test pressure, (2) at maximum operating liquid level and
specific gravity at design pressure.
3.3 Design Calculations
3.3.1 Detailed vessel design, including internals, shall be the total responsibility of
VENDOR. When VENDOR is required to furnish process design, it shall be
indicated on the Equipment Specification and/or Pressure Vessel Data
Sheet.
3.3.2 All pressure vessels shall be designed to withstand the load exerted by
intemal or external pressure, temperature, weight of vessel, wind, earthquake
and reaction of supports,
3.3.3 All pressure vessels in hydrocarbon service shall be of welded construction
with full radiography in accordance with UW-12 (a) Joint Description Number
1. Pressure vessels in all other service, as a minimum, shall be spot
radiographed.
3.3.4 The VENDOR shall submit to COMPANY for approval the detailed
calculations for the design of the pressure vessel including all components
and appurtenances; i.e., thickness of shell, head, saddles, skirt, legs, etc.,
reinforcement requirements for nozzles, handholes, manways, inspection
openings, etc.; lifting lugs, base plates, anchor bolt chairs, bolt rings, mist
eliminator design, etc., nozzle reaction load for nozzles used for relief,
venting, etc., and tubesheets.
4.0 MECHANICAL DESIGN
44 Provisions for Corrosion
The internal corrosion allowance shall be 1/8” minimum, unless specified otherwise
on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet. Corrosion allowance shall be added once onlyUNOCAL® UNFIRED PRESSURE VESSELS

to removable internals. Fixed carbon steel internals shall have a corrosion allowance
added to each surface exposed to the process stream.
Minimum Thickness
4.2.1 The minimum thickness for pressure-vessel components, where the specified
corrosion allowance is 0 through 1/16 inch, shall be as listed below. If the
specified corrosion allowance (CA) exceed 1/16 inch, add CA less 1/16 inch
to the minimum specified below.

Minimum thickness is 3/8 inch for horizontal vessels and vertical vessels
exceeding 25 feet overall height.
Minimum wall thickness of pipe shall consider manufacturer's tolerance of
#12.5%.
*: The nozzle wall thickness need to be at least the same wall thickness as
the connecting pipe per GS-8.
Heads
Heads for pressure vessels shall be one piece construction, semi-elipsoidal (ratio 2:1)
and concave to pressure in vacuum, unless otherwise specified in the pressure vessel
data sheet. For substitution of other type heads, all pertinent dimensions and
information shall be approved in writing by COMPANY before the heads are ordered,

4.4.4 Horizontal Vessel Supports
4.4.1.1 Horizontal vessels shall be supported on steel saddles preferably at a distance
of A <= Ri2 (A = Distance of Saddle Centerline to Head Seam, R = Vessel
Outside Radius) with a 1200 minimum arc contact angle.SPECIFICATION SPEC. GS-3

4.4.1.2 The wear plate thickness shall not exceed the vessel shell thickness. The wear
plate must extend a minimum of R/10 beyond the saddle horn (or tip). The wear
plate minimum width shall be as per the following: b+10t where b= Saddle width
at vessel and t= vessel new shell thickness. There shall be two (2) 1/4” NPT
tell-tale holes at the outer extremities in each saddle wear plate at a point where
they will not interfere with the saddle.
4.4.1.3 VENDOR shall furnish and install the support saddles. Horizontal vessels
supported by saddles shall be designed according to the method of L.P. Zick
(Stresses in Large Horizontal Pressure Vessels on Two Saddle Supports).
Unless otherwise specified in the Equipment Specification, Saddles shall be
designed for a minimum of 0.5G each of longitudinal force and transverse force
acting simultaneously for transportation loads. Additional members shall be
installed as required for this condition.
4.4.1.4 The required height of the saddles referenced from the vessel centerline shall
be as stated on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet.
4.4.1.5 For horizontal vessel which has operating temperature higher than 150 deg F or
vessel seam-seam length is greater than 30 ft, the vessel saddles shall be
bolted support. Saddle bolt holes shall be slotted at one end of the vessel to
provide for thermal expansion. Welded support can be used only if stress
calculation has been performed by the vendor and approved by the Company.
For horizontal vessel which has operating temperature lower than 150 F and
vessel seam-seam length is less than 30 ft, the vessel saddles shall be welded
support, with stress calculation performed by the vendor and approved by the
Company.”
44.2 Vertical Vessel Supports
4.4.2.1 All vessels shall be designed to be self-supporting without the use of guys or
braces.
4.4.2.2 Vertical vessels shall be supported on skirt unless legs or lugs are specified in
Pressure Vessel Data Sheet.
4.4.2.3 Design of tall, slender vessels with a length-to diameter ratio exceeding 8:1 shall
include consideration of vibration and critical wind velocity.
4.4.2.4 For vessel bottom shell course thickness of 1" and below, the outside diameter
of the skirt shall be the same as the outside diameter of supported vessel, For
the bottom shell course thickness greater than 1”, the mean diameter of the skirt
shall coincide with mean diameter of the bottom shell course.
4.4.2.5 The height of the skirt referenced from the bottom head seam shall be as stated
on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet, or if not stated, skirt height shall be

4.4.26 Skirt of vertical vessels shall contain a minimum number and size of access
‘openings and vents below. Vents shall be located near the skirt top spaced at
90° or 180° points.

4.4.2.7 All openings in the skirt that are 3" in diameter and larger shall be reinforced
with sleeves to compensate for loss of material at these points.
4.4.2.8 For pipe penetration through skirt, opening shall be large enough to pass the
flange of piping connected to the bottom head nozzle.
4.4.29 All vertical vessels 25 feet seam-to-seam or taller shall have a continuous base
ring with a continuous compression ring and gusset plates on each side of bolt
hole. When the number of anchor bolts cause the chairs to be too close
together for fitting and welding, the skirt shall be flared (conical skirt) to increase
base plate diameter.
4.42.10 If anchor bolts are required for vertical vessels on the Pressure Vessel
Data Sheet, the number of anchor bolts shall be in multiples of four (4) and.
there shall be a minimum of eight (8). The minimum size of anchor bolts, for
towers only, shall be 1" diameter. The minimum size anchor bolt permitted for
other vessels is 3/4". Anchor bolts shall be placed to straddle the 0°
centerline of the vessel. The allowable anchor bolt stress shall be 15,000 psi,
unless noted otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet, calculated on the
root area of the bolts.
442.11 If anchor bolts are specified as required on the Pressure Vessel Data
Sheet, bolt holes in the base ring shall be 1/4” larger in diameter than the
bolts. The bolt circle shall ie outside the skirt. Bolt holes in lug plates or
rings shall be 1/4" larger in diameter than the bolts. If chair lugs are required
by design, they shall be designed with pipe guides which have no burrs or
protruding inside edges.
442.12 Unless specified otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet, a
minimum of two (2) 2" radius semi-circular drain holes 18001 apart shall be
located at the vessel skirt to base ring attachment weld. The drain holes shall
be staggered 900 from the skirt vent holes.UNOCAL®

Only flange opening shall be used on vessels with hydrocarbon service.
Flanged nozzles 1-1/2" and smaller shall be long weld neck type. However,
#6000 Full-size couplings with full penetration plus 14’ fillet welds for 1-1/2" and
below are acceptable when specified in Pressure Vessel Data Sheet.
Alll external flanges shall be of the weld neck or long weld neck type unless
‘specified otherwise. The bore of weld neck flange shall match the inside
diameter of the pipe. Flange facing finish shall comply with ASME B16.5. Slip-
‘on flange shall not be used
No threaded openings shall be tapped directly into the shell or head plate.
Threadolets shall not be used.
A\ll pressure bearing flanges shall comply with ASME B16.5 unless otherwise

‘special flanges are required, VENDOR shall obtain prior written approval from
COMPANY. These flanges shall be designed in accordance with the latest
edition of the ASME Section Vill and calculations shall be submitted to
COMPANY with the Approval Drawings.
Nozzle sizes 1-1/4", 2-1/2", 3-1/2", 5", and 7" shall not be used unless specified
otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet. Nozzle necks made of welding
elbows and bends will not be permitted except where specified on the Pressure
Vessel Data Sheet.
All nozzles shall be flush with inside of vessel when used as drains, when
located at the top of vessels and could be used as vents, or when so located
that there would be interference with vessel internals. Unless noted otherwise
on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet, nozzle inside projection shall not exceed %”
for nozzle NPS 12" and smaller and 1-1/2" for nozzle larger than 12". Alll inside
nozzle projections are to be indicated on the Approval Drawings. Intemal edges
of nozzle necks shall be rounded smooth.
Unless noted otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet, minimum outside
projection of flange nozzles and manways shall be as follows:

Handhole As short as possible
The outside projection of the nozzle shall be approved by COMPANY on the
Approval Drawings. All nozzle projections shall be considered from vessel ODUNOCAL®

to the flange face and from the short side of tangential nozzles. When
insulation or thick reinforcing pads are required, it shall be necessary to.
increase these dimensions by the thickness of the insulation and/or the pad.
Threaded couplings shall have a minimum outside projection of 1-1/2" and
shall extend at least 1/2" outside of insulation.
Unless noted otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet, manholes or
handholes shall be provided on all pressure vessels as follows:
Vessel ID smaller than 32" - 2 Handholes
Vessel ID 32" and larger. - 1 manhole
‘Tower containing trays shall, as a minimum, have manholes at above and
below the Tray section. Oval type manhole or handhole shall not be used.
Manholes shall be complete with blind flange, bolting, gaskets, davits. All
davit arms shall be fabricated from 2" XXS seamless pipe. A grease fitting
shall be provided on the side of the socket to allow for greasing of the davit.
The imum size of manholes shall be 18" inside diameter unless specified
otherwise. Towers and vessels with removable internals or requiring
frequent access shall have 18" internal diameter manholes or larger as.
required. Blind flanges shall be equipped with a handle fabricated from 24"
‘solid rod.
Handholes shall be minimum NPS 8" diameter with blind flange, bolting, and
gaskets, unless noted otherwise on the Pressure Vessel Data Sheet. Blind
flanges shall be equipped with a handle fabricated from 14" solid rod.
