Gregory Porter Lyrics

"Concorde"

With a million stars in the galaxy

When I'm floating with them it's hard for me to see
I'm holding onto this dear Earth
As it spins around with me
With a million miles of odometry
And the moon like a goon staring back at me
I'm holding onto this dear Earth
With love and gravity

60 thousand feet up in the air

I can't wait to come down, drop down
I've been that fool, I let my fuel run low
Let my people know I'm all drop down

Slicing through the stratosphere

Twice the speed of sound
My life is moving under me
Before I touch the ground

30 thousand feet up in the air

I can't wait to get there, drop down
The only thing I seem to see around
Is sand in which you stand within my hand

Slicing through the stratosphere

Twice the speed of sound
My life is moving under me
Before I touch the ground, oh

30 thousand feet up in the air

I can't wait to come down, drop down
The only thing I seem to see around
Is sand in which you stand within my hand

Slicing through the stratosphere

Twice the speed of sound
You are my life that's moving under me
Before I touch the ground

And now, 10 thousand feet up in the air

I can't wait to get there
Drop down

"Dad Gone Thing"

Jack of all trade

Master of everything
Lived a life with a spice
For the party he brings

He could out-pray the Pope

More junk, more dope
He was my missin' link
Pour him another drink

He was always there

To hear the church-bells ringing
Front row, right pew
So that he could be seen

I was with him through all of this

But a few things that he missed
He didn't teach me a dad gone thing
But how to sing

He charmed all the ladies

They would watch his show
He made art from his heart
He could make a tear flow

He could out-play the devil

Out-smart him too
If you would hear him croon his tune
He would blow your mind too

He was always there

To hear the church-bells ringing
Front row, right pew
They might call him to do his thing

He spun around in the pulpit

Flashin' a diamond ring
He didn't teach me a dad gone thing
But how to sing

He charmed all the ladies

They would watch his show
He was smart, he was sharp
But didn't wanna let go

He could out-play the devil

But why did he play me?
I stood right in front of his stage
But still I was hard to see

He was always there

To hear the church-bells ringing
Front row, right pew
So that he could be seen

He would trade his only son

For the life that he could get
So the son went to the father's church
Stepped into the pulpit

Laying his head back, and opened his mouth

The church jumped up like spring
You didn't teach me a dad gone thing
But how to sing
And I won't sing my song
(Heavenly Father)
Sing my song
(Heavenly Father)
Heavenly Father
(Heavenly Father)

Can you hear my plea?

(Heavenly Father)
Heavenly Father, now, now, yeah
(Heavenly Father)

(Heavenly Father)
Hey now, Heavenly Father
(Heavenly Father)
Can you hear my song?
(Heavenly Father)
Can you hear my song?

"Dad Gone Thing" is about Gregory Porter's father, Rufus Porter. Gregory explained,
"It's both sweet and heartbreaking to learn that the daddy I didn't know was a
great singer, a veteran, a great cook... all these charismatic things. 'Oh, by the
way,' I'm being told. 'The very thing you do, the thing that is central to your
life, he gave it to you.' My voice."

"Revival Song"

I try to run
And I grow weary
I try to walk
And I grow faint
Oh, I long to soar
On the wings like an eagle
But I look down
And I'm afraid
I'm afraid

But you life me higher

Out of the fire, out of the flames
I lost the feeling
But you give me meaning again

I'm singing revival (Revival)

Revival song (Revival)
I'm singing revival (Revival)
Revival song (Revival)

I tried to find you

Lost my way
Walked in the darkness
In search of day
I followed your footsteps
To the gates of the city
I saw your face
Oh, I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid

You life me higher

Out of the fire, out of the flames
I lost the feeling
But you give me meaning again

You life me higher

Out of the fire, out of the flames
I lost the feeling
But you give me meaning again

(Revival)
Singing revival (Revival)
Revival song (Revival)
I'm singing revival (Revival)
Revival song (Revival)

Oh, I'm singing revival (Revival)

Revival song (Revival)
I'm singing revival (Revival)
Revival song (Revival)

Oh, you give me meaning

You give me meaning
(Revival) Our revival
(Revival)
A resurrection (Revival)
I want my revival
I want my revival (Revival)
(Revival)
Oh, my revival (Revival)
Oh (Revival)
Oh
You're my revival
Oh, my revival

"If Love Is Overrated"

If love is overrated
Let me be the one that is naive
If love is overrated
Let me be the one that is deceived

Let me find that your hands that are touching me

Is not the hand that's supposed to be
Your lips, an illusion
Let me be the only fool for your embrace
Let me fall upon my face
I like this strange illusion
If love is overrated
Why is it the only thing I serve?
If love is overrated
Why is the one I'm in the one that I deserve?

I can tell you, oh, it feels so real

Every touch that I steal
Your arms, an illusion
Let me be the only fool for your embrace
Let me fall upon my face
I like this strange illusion

Whoa, I'm okay

With love's never ending dream
It's a risk I like to take
In the hope I never wake
From this thing I call my fake reality

If love is overrated
Let me be the one that is naive
If love is overrated
Let me be the one that is deceived

Let me find that your hands that are touching me

Is not the hand that's supposed to be
Your lips, an illusion
Let me be the only fool that you embrace
Let me fall upon my face
I like this strange illusion

Whoa, I'm okay

Love's never ending dream
That's a risk I like to take
In the hope I'll never wake
From this thing I call my fake reality

If love is overrated
I like overrated
If love is overrated
I love overrated
If love is overrated
I am obsessed with overrated
If love is overrated
I'm in love with overrated

"Faith In Love"

Your eyes, they tell the truth of your affection

Your song is all the ones I wanna hear
I believe in Jesus and all that he can do
And I wanna have a little faith in you

Your eyes, they tell the truth of your affection

Your songs are all the ones I'd like to hear
I believe in Jesus and all that he can do
But I wanna have a little faith in you

I emptied all the bags of my journey

And I found a broken heart or two
I believe in love and all that it can do
And I wanna have a little faith in you

I've been lost for forty years without your love

I've cried a river of tears without your love
Feel like I'm livin' in a modern miracle
Oh, then I found some faith in you

I've been lost for forty years

And I've cried a river, a river of tears
Well, it seems like I'm livin' in a modern miracle
'Cause I'm now havin' a little faith in you

Your eyes tell a story of my affection

The songs are the songs I wanna hear
I believe in Jesus and all that he can do
Now I wanna have a little faith in you

I've emptied out the bags of my long journey

Inside I found a broken heart or two
Oh girl, I believe in love and all that it can do
But I wanna have a little faith in you

'Cause I believe in you, oh, I believe in you

Oh, I believe in you, oh, I believe in you
Oh, I believe in you, oh, I believe in you
Oh, I believe in you, oh

'Cause I believe in you, oh, I believe in you

Oh, I believe in you, oh, I'm in love with you
(Oh, I believe in you, oh, I believe in you)
(Oh, I believe in you, oh, I'm in love with you)

(I believe in you, I'm in love with you)

I believe in love
(Gotta have faith)
Put my faith in love
(I believe in you, I'm in love with you)
Oh, I believe in love
(Gotta have faith)

I believe in the power of love

(Gotta have faith)
I believe in lovin' you
(Oh, I believe in you)
(Oh, I believe in you)
(Oh, I believe in you)
(Gotta have faith)
"Merchants Of Paradise"

These merchants of paradise

Come say what you will
You sellers of God's creations
No longer free

These merchants of paradise

You plant your signs in the minds of children
The ones that don't know the names of their gods
You merchants of paradise

Someday they're going to live their lives in peace

You merchants of paradise

Come say what you will
You sellers of God's creations
No longer free

These merchants of paradise

You plant your minds in the minds of children
The ones that don't know the games of the gods
You merchants of paradise

Somebody's gonna let them live their lives in peace

Someday they'll go free

And they'll turn to the sun
When they go free
When they say to the sun

When they go free

They will say, "Where were you?"
They'll talk to the sun
And they'll say, "Where were you?"

They'll turn their face to the sun

They will say, "Where were you? Where were you?"
They'll cry to the sun
"Where were you? Where were you?"

When they go free

When they go free
When they go free

"Long List Of Troubles"

Just like cold steel shot hot out of a gun

Just like a orange peel left all day in the sun
I've got no feel that's done left me scarred
What don't kill me has done made me hard

Just like storms feel when you've got no place to run

Just like love feels when you thought she was the one
From the school of hard-knocks
Trapped between a rock and a hard place
What don't kill me has done made me hard

I've learned to breathe underwater

And lay fire to bed
I'm just a man under pressure
Like Muddy Waters said

Disappointment can drop me

From a thousand stories high
I got a spare set of wings
Watch me fly

Just like storms feel when you've no place to run

Just like love feels when you thought she was the one
The school of hard-knocks
Right between a rock and a hard place
What don't kill me has done made me hard

I've learned to breathe underwater

And lay fire to bed
I'm just a man under pressure
Like Muddy Waters said

Disappointment can drop me

From a thousand stories high
I've got a spare pair of wings
Oh, watch me fly

Taxes are due

And I'm through with you
I've been lonely a long time
I'm hungry now
And I was hungry then

I've gotta know them

I've got a notice just the other day
They said that I'm underwater
I'm underwater

"Mister Holland"

Hello, Mister Holland

And Rosie may come out and play
She's a good girl now
Won't be no trouble, no how

By the way, Mister Holland

I like the way you make no trouble of my skin
It's not a problem
Nor has it ever been

You invited me into your home

Treated me like I was grown
I was only 18
And Rosie was a beauty queen

Hello, Mister Holland

And Rosie may come out and play
I'm a good boy now
Won't be no trouble, no how

By the way, Mister Holland

I liked the way you treated me like a regular Joe
I wanted a soda
And you said Rosie could go

Anyway, I like your style

Seemed like I'll be around for a while
We can talk about a country mile
And listen to a blues record, check it out, oh

Hello, Mister Holland

And Rosie may come out and play
It's a good world now
Won't be no trouble, no how

And by the way, Mister Holland

I liked the way you treated me like a regular being
My name is not a problem
And oh, it never will

Anyway, I like your way

People ought to be able to play
And keep your soul as black as the night
When you walk in straight into the light
Oh now

Anyhow, I like your way

People ought to be able to play
And keep your soul as black as the night
As you walk into the brighter light

Mama used to fear for me

When you walk out in the world, you see
Some people will fear your face and name
But Mister Holland, don't play that game

Oh, Mister Holland

Oh, Mister Holland
Oh, Mister Holland
Oh, always treat me right

Oh, Mister Holland

Oh, Mister Holland
Oh, Mister Holland
Oh, Mister Holland always treat me right
Mister Holland
Hey, Mister Holland
Thank you, Mister Holland
You sure 'nuff treat me right

Mister Holland
Hey, Mister Holland
Hey, Mister Holland
But you always treat me right, oh

"Modern Day Apprentice"

I'm a modern day apprentice for your love

I'm a modern day apprentice for your love
If I have to work for free, it'll be alright with me
I'm a modern day apprentice for your love

If I have to work all night for your love

If I have to work all night for your love
If I have to work all night, girl, it'll be alright
I'm a modern day apprentice for your love

And I won't write a few new pages

Till your book of love you'll see
What I write on those pages
Will help you work with me

I'm a modern day apprentice for your love

I'm a modern day apprentice for your love
I'm a modern day apprentice for your love

"Everything You Touch Is Gold"

Everything you touch is gold

That is why my soul is shinin'
Feel just like I'm just ten years old
Everything is new and surprisin'

You don't have to dig too deep

To find out your effect on me
'Cause everybody that I know can see
And they're asking me
What is goin' on in your life? Oh

Everything you touch is gold

That is why my soul is shinin'
Our story is not yet told
Oh girl, I think that you can stop minin'

I don't have to dig to see

My treasure standin' right in front of me
Everyone that I know is askin' me
What is goin' on in your life? Oh

And it feels like heaven

Touchin' your hair
But it's just like heaven
Callin' your name

But it's just like heaven

Sittin' near you
But it's just like heaven
Somebody's gonna have to bring me back to ground

Everything you touch is gold

That is why my soul is shinin'
Feel just like I'm ten years old
Everything is new and excitin'

You don't have to dig too deep

To find out your effect on me
'Cause everyone that I know in my life
Is asking me, "Is she gonna be your wife?"

Everything you touch is gold

Everything you touch is gold
Everything you touch is gold
Everything you touch is gold

Everything you touch is gold

Needing you here
Touchin' your hand
Seeing you in the mornin'

I could shine another song

I could write another song
There are a thousand things I could say

If I went there
I could write a thousand songs about you
If I went there
I could write a thousand songs about you

And I will
Gimme the time
Yes, I will
Gimme some time, yeah

And I will
Gimme some time
And I will

Keep it right there

Keep it right there
Don't you go nowhere
Keep it right there

"Phoenix"

Our love
Battered and worn
Tired and torn
You've grown tired of me

No love grows on its own

Left all alone
It's inspired in me

Love fallen from grace

Can rise from the ashes
And fall into place

Love is just like a Phoenix

It can fly, it can glow
And it's based upon the dreams that we've both been dreaming of
Promises, you know
Promise, you know
Love is just like a Phoenix
Let it sky, let it grow
This is just a thing that, oh, I've been dreaming of
The promises, you know
Promise, you know

In love
We've come so far
Look to the stars
Hold on to me

Take my wings
Hold on tight
Cling to my love
Hold on to me

A love fallen from grace

Can rise from the ashes
And fall into place

Love is just like a Phoenix

It can fly, it can glow
And it's based upon the dreams that we've both been dreaming of
Oh, the promise, you know
Promise, you know
Love is just like a Phoenix
Let it sky, let it grow
This is just the sort of thing that we've both been hoping for
The promises, you know
Promise, you know
So let's rise, rise, rise
Rise, rise, rise
Rise, rise, rise
Rise, rise, rise

Love is just like a Phoenix

It can fly, it can glow
And it's based upon the dreams that we've both been dreaming of
And, whoa, the promises, you know
Promise, you know
Love is just like a Phoenix
Let it sky, let it grow
This is just what we've both been dreaming of
Oh, the promises, you know
Promise, you know

Rise, rise, rise

Rise, rise, rise
Rise, rise, rise
Rise, rise, rise

"Merry Go Round"

Follow me around
Get up on my merry go round
Follow me around
Get up on my merry go round

You might choose the one that's light blue

The golden one seems like it's new
You can change your horse, but that don't change the course
Of my love

Follow me around
Get up on my merry go round
Follow me around
Get up on my merry go round

Golden one might seem nice to you

And I might be rusty, not new
You can change your horse, but that don't change the course
Of my love

Just imagine a life

Filled with wild rides and tricky games
Popcorn smells on carousels
Hot pots are roast, rollers coast all night long

Just imagine a life

Full of lots of pretty dreams
Have a toast if I may boast
We'll spin around without a scream
Here we go

Just imagine a life

Full of lots of pretty dreams
Have a toast if I may boast
We'll spin around without a scream

Follow me around
Get up on my merry go round
Follow me around
Get up on my merry go round

You can choose the golden one too

I hope that I'm good enough for you
You can change your horse, but that don't change the course
Of my love

Follow me around
Follow me around and around and around and around
And around and around and around and around

"Real Truth"

You can leave your ego at the door

When you come inside, you won't need it no more
This is no hour of make-believe
Open your mind and you'll receive
The real, the real

Everybody now can live a lie

Take it as their word, you dare not ask why
This is no hour of make-believe
Open your heart and you'll receive
The real, the real

You can leave your ego at the door (Leave it at the door)
When you come inside, you won't need it no more
This is no hour of make-believe
Open your mind and you'll receive
The real, the real

Everybody now can live a lie

Open your mind and you'll receive
The real, the real truth

The real truth, ooh

You inspire me

(Even when I'm at my best, I am blessed that You do the rest)

When I was nine or ten

You became my beginning and my end
In between Lakeview and Haley Street
That's where the outdoor church would meet
Thank You
Thank You
