Speech on Viruses and Personal Hygiene:

Intro: 40 seconds

On 11 September, 2001 deadliest terrorist attack took place in America at world trade center and those
events impacted the airline industry revenue globally. After 20 years, airline industry is again facing
similar revenue crises. Today it is estimated that airline industry may lose upto $113 dollar in revenue in
because of coronavirus outbreak. Over 80 countries have now confirmed cases of coronavirus, with
more than 3,400 deaths.

Honorable management, the respected judges and colleagues, I would like to thank you for giving me
this opportunity to speak on my topic Viruses and Personal Hygiene in HSE week 2020.

Dear Colleagues, good personal hygiene is one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves and
othersfrom viruses and illness. We have often heard that prevention is better than cure but in these
testing times we are facing viruses which have no cure and only prevention against them is to follow
good personal hygiene practices.

Viruses: 30 seconds

Viruses are very tiny germs and Viruses cause familiar infectious diseases such as the common cold and
flu. They also cause severe illnesses such as Coronavirus, smallpox, and Ebola. Some viruses are very
contagious and they can easily spread such as coronavirus which has started from wuhan ,a city in china
and is now viral in 80 countries. Coronavirus are most commonly spread from infected person by
coughing and sneezing, close personal contacts such as touching or shaking hands, or touching a surface
with virus on it and then touching your mouth nose or ears before washing your hands. Symptoms of
coronavirus are cough fever and shortness of breath.

Personal Hygiene&Coronavirus : 1min 30

Ladies and Gentlemen, personal hygiene refers to practices associated with ensuring good health and
cleanliness. The first place to start with your personal hygiene routine are your hands since our hands are
biggest carrier of germs. We can stop the spread of illness causing germs by washing our hands
frequently with water and soap. Oral hygiene includes brushing your teeth twice in a day. Daily bathing
is an integral part of good personal hygiene because it kills the odour causing bacteria. We should wash
our clothes so that germs and impurities are removed.

Other than health benefits, Good personal hygiene is important because of social benefits as well since
it will impact the lives of those around you. Maintaining good hygiene also helps you have better self
esteem. When you take care of how you look, you feel better about yourself.

Dear colleagues Coronavirus is spreading faster in countries outside china. World health Organization
(WHO) is urging people that Personal Hygiene Can Protect From Coronavirus Infection since it will take
time before any viable vaccine is available. Some good personal hygiene practices to fight coronavirus
include using tissue paper whenever sneezing or coughing and then dispose it off properly. We should
keep public toilets clean and dry.

Personal Hygiene at SNGPL 40 seconds

Maintaining our good personal hygiene in sngpl will help us stop the spread of disease carrying viruses
among our colleagues. We should keep our workplace clean and educate others on the importance of
cleaning because our desks, offices, kitchens and washrooms are common breeding ground of germs
and viruses. Eating and Drinking is strictly prohibited in workshops, stores and all areas where there is
usage of any chemical, grease and oil to avoid biological hazard. Personal hygiene of food handlers at
canteen should be upto mark. The last HSE golden rule mentioned on pledge card focuses to adopt
healthy food choices to improve physical and mental health. We should all read the pledge card and sign
it as commitment towards good personal hygiene. Face masks provided to all departments by HSE are
NIOSH N95 approved and they can diminish the spread of coronavirus. If we observe any unsafe
condition due to unhygienic workplace, we can use Routine safety audit form to list and rectify the
unsafe condition.

Conclusion:

Ladies and Gentlemen, in the end I will conclude by focusing on some barriers which make personal
hygiene difficult to fight viruses. One barrier is our attitude toward safety. We should be strong advocate
of safety to cross this barrier. Another barrier is our role and responsibility. We have to lead like a
champion of safety effort to cross this barrier. This is our responsibility to maintain a good personal
hygiene at workplace and this is also the theme of HSE Week 2020 : Breaking Barriers to HSE culture.
