Nationwide, firearms were the most common weapon at 40.8%, followed by strong-arm tactics at 42.2%. By region, the South had the highest percentage of robberies involving firearms at 51.4%, while the Northeast had the highest percentage involving strong-arm tactics at 51.7%. Knives or cutting instruments were used in 7.9% of robberies overall but were more common in the Northeast and Midwest.
