INTRODUCTION TO WORK SAMPLING

Work sampling is a method in which large number of instantaneous

observations are made at random interval of time over a large period over a
group of machines, workers or operations. Each observation records what is
happening at that instant of time and the percentage of observations recorded
for a particular activity or delay or idleness. It measures percentage of the time
during which the activity occurs

MAJOR USES OF WORK SAMPLING:-

1. Work sampling can be used as ratio study of working and idle times
2. It can be utilised as performance sampling study in which working
and idleness on working times are measured and a performance
index is prepared.
3. It can be used as a work measurement technique

I have taken observations from a random time calculator in the set of 15

observations over the course of 10 days. These observations would help
me realise where I spend my time these days and help me know how to
optimise my efficiency in activities. These observations include time
spend in activities as classes, study, entertainment, exercise and others.

By doing so I would get to realise how much non required idle time I
have and then replace it with something I aspire to do

I have recorded my observations initially and finally prepared a control

chart with upper and lower control limit for analysing the data and made
a control chart for it.
