ARCHITECT BIOGRAPHY

CESAR PELLI

Cesar Pelli is an Argentian American architect who designed

the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and
some of the world’s tallest buildings. Cesar Pelli was born on
October 12, 1926 in Tucuman, Argentina. He studied
architecture at the National University of Tucumán and
graduated in 1949. In 1952, after earning a bachelor’s degree,
he moved to the United States for advanced study in
architecture in the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign and received his Master of Science in
Architecture degree in 1954. After he graduated from the
University of Illinois School of Architecture, he began his professional career with the firm
of  Eero Saarinen in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, for ten years. From 1964-1968, Pelli was
director of design at Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall in Los Angeles and at Gruen
Associates from 1968 to 1977. During those years, he learned a huge deal about technology
related to glass skins, producing buildings with lightweight and translucent quality. Then in
1977, Pelli established Cesar Pelli and Associates (now Pelli Clarke Pelli), his own office in
New Haven, Connecticut. He also served as dean of the School of Architecture at Yale
University from 1977 to 1984. In the mid-1990s Pelli was known for the lightweight,
almost tent-like, appearance of his buildings, which were often surfaced in glass or a thin
stone veneer.

Along with all this, throughout his professional life Pelli lectured enormously as well and
won more than eighty awards including the American Institute of Architects 1995 Gold
Medal for his offerings for the field of architecture and excellent designs. Apart from
designing, he also developed his writing passion and have published a number of pieces
which are contributing to the architectural world in their own way. On July 19, 2019, Pelli
had died at the age of 92 at his home in New Haven, Connecticut.
