Lesson Plan for College and Career- Planning for What is Next

School Counselor: H. Klegon and J. Hoff


Target Audience: All junior students
Mindsets & Behaviors: M 4. Understanding that postsecondary education and life-long learning
(limit of three) are necessary for long term career success.

Students will: Be able to identify 3 possible careers they would like to pursue

Students will: Be able to recognize the path to at least 1 potential career.

PowerPoint presentation, computer, writing utensils

Procedure: Describe how you will:


Introduce: Introduce school counselors and the topic of careers.
15 minutes
Poll everywhere activity, asking the question “what did you want to be
when you were little?” Repeat the same Poll Everywhere but “what do
you want to be now?” Discuss differences

Pass out two question survey asking


1. What future career are you interested in?
2. Do you know the education/ requirements to get to that desired
job?

Communicate Today’s lesson will focus on different careers and the different career
Lesson Objective: paths you can take to get there.
2 minutes
Teach Content: Powerpoint: Reviews what it will be like to take O*Net assessment with
SC example.
10 minutes

Practice Content: Brainstorm: In groups, have students talk about potential careers they
may be interested in for about 10 minutes.
20 minutes
Then: Take the O*Net career assessment

Summarize: Have students participate if they choose to do so and share the results of
their assessment.
10 minutes
Close: Post survey: “ Do you know the steps needed to get to your desired job”?

3 minutes Brief survey of results i.e. show of hands if you’ve found a career you
hadn’t thought of before, show of hands
