the market trading between countries are becoming more open, so that strangers will be more
freely of transitions of a country. With a mastery of English is of course will be very helpful
to communicate if there are citizens of other countries to visit our region. In this paper we

DISCUSSION

A. Meaning, How to Use and the Example of Even if, Unless, However, On the Other Hand, In
Contrast, Nevertheless
1) Even if
Even if means "whether or not" which leads to extraordinary or unexpected events but
there is a possibility of happening.
“Even if" is used in a supposition or hypothesis or refers to an unreal situation. For
the example:
 Even if he failed to win the badminton competition, he would still feel happy.
 They will still drive to work even if it snows tomorrow.
 I think he will do nothing even if he is fired and doesn’t receive his final paycheck.
2) Unless
Unless means except if (used to introduce the case in which a statement being made is
not true or valid). "Unless" is similar in meaning to 'if not' and can be used instead of if
not in certain types of conditional sentences. Like 'if', "unless" is followed by a present
tense, a past tense, or a past perfect tense.
 Conditional Type 1 : UNLESS + PRESENT TENSE
Example:
1. Tina will be fat unless she stops eating.
2. The customer will not pay unless the GRAB’s driver gives the order directly.
3. Unless you work hard, you will not be the champion.
 Conditional Type 2 : UNLESS + PAST TENSE
Example:
1. Kyla would be at school unless she was ill.
2. My father wouldn’t drink coffee unless he was really sleepy.

 Conditional Type 3 : UNLESS + PAST PERFECT TENSE

Example:
1. My parents wouldn’t have called me unless I had climbed the tree.
2. The robbers would have shot the teller unless he had given them the PIN of safety
box.
3) However
"However" means 'but'. "However" is used a lot of informal language, "However" is
more formal than 'but'. Use "However" to contrast two things that are different.
"However" can also be placed in the middle or at the end of the sentence.

However, it is used when combining 2 sentences that have conflicting meanings. For
the example:
 The rain is heavy outside. However, Mark goes swimming.
 The weather was really bad, however they still went hiking.
 We ate bunch of foods, however we were still feeling hungry.

4) On the other hand

On the other hand, it is a conjunctive adverb. It is used to compare two situations or
two people and to show that there is an important difference between them. For the
example:
 This private school is very expensive. On the other hand, education of the school is
very well.
 We had no money but, on the other hand, we were very happy.
 My mom buys some fruits on the other hand, she doesn’t buy mango.

5) In contrast
In contrast, it means the opposite and is used as a conjunction to connect two
sentences that show opposite/different meanings/explanations. The difference lies in the
way the words are used. "In contrast" is usually followed by 'to' or 'with' and requires a
noun to follow it. For the example:
 This child is short and fat. In contrast, her sister is tall and thin.
 Some people are extroverts. In contrast, some people are introverts.
 A tablet PC is lightweight and easy to carry. In contrast, a laptop offers a bigger
processing power.
6) Nevertheless
"Nevertheless" is a transition and links two sentences or clauses of a sentence, often
presenting contrasting ideas. It can easily be used in place of 'however', but not always.
"Nevertheless" is used to show the relationship between two clauses or sentences or
you use "Nevertheless" when saying something that contrasts with what has just been
said. The word Nevertheless is used to emphasize the fact that the second point
contradicts the first. For the example:
 I have done for TOEFL Test repeatedly. Nevertheless, I get the result are still less
than the target of graduation.
 Larry was happy to get a gift from his sister to go to Singapore. Nevertheless, he is
sad that must go alone.
 They have been trying to the best to hold a birthday celebration. Nevertheless, the
assessments obtained did not match of their expectations.
