Philippines is a democratic country wherein the people/citizens, has the power or has the
right to participate directly or indirectly in the state. Talking about democracy, the citizens has
the freedom to choose the leader that will rule over the country or state. Who are these people
having those rights? All people living in the Philippines are considered citizens but not all may
acquire those rights in a given period of time for others may not yet qualified to participate like
the national elections due to being a minor. The nation faces a phenomenon wherein many
citizens tend to not engage with regards to the national elections for some reasons. Others were
very willing for the reason of having benefits from the ones whom they’ll cast their votes, but
was it really the primary motive for participating in the national election? There goes a saying,
“The youth is the hope of our nation” wherein it is accurate because it should be started from the
youths. The youths must be educated with regards on this matter, they must truly understand the
essence of participating in the national elections for it plays a big role in the future of a country,
it lies within the decision or the choice of the citizens living in it.
A basic principle is that support for the political participation of young people should
extend across the electoral cycle. Capacity development for young candidates, for example, has
proven to be more effective as a continuous effort than as a one-off event three months before an
election. Young people who participate actively in their community from early on are more
likely to become engaged citizens and voters. According to Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-
General of the United Nations, “No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy.
Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be
