Life is a drama or a comedy, you either laugh or cry; humans are submerged in a
type of theatre play in which they are the main spectators. However, there are some specific
periods in life in which humans are par excellence joyful, and passionate––youth. Youth
may be somewhat endless when people go through this period of time. When people are
young, life may be easy in a way: almost no illness, full of vitality, and most importantly, less
burden of bitterness and sorrow. Nonetheless, what happens when life goes on and people
start feeling the burden of life? In the novel ‘’The Sense of an Ending’’ written by Julian
Barness, there are some joyful and depressing situations a person might experience
throughout life: short-term friendship, relationship between couples and depression.
Friendship might be whether for all life or not. Such is the case of Alex, Colin, Tony,
and Adrian. The story tells that in fresh highschool years, they are truly friends; their
friendship is mainly based on their common preferences, intellect, and philosophy.
However, as years passed by, this group of friends dissolved, and took different paths. To
draw a parallelism with humans, they also experience this upside down in life in friendship.
Sometimes friendship may be short-term, and it is dissolved because there may not be
common interest among the members.
Last, but not least, suicide is a common event that might be seen in everyday life.
Depression usually leads people to commit suicide. For instance, in the novel there can be
seen that Adrian could not stand that he was going to be the father of a baby whose mother
was the mother of his ex girlfriend. Some people may experience situations like this in life
where in pursuit of a solution, find suicide as a medicine for the spirit.
By and large, throughout life people might experience different mood joy, depression,
happiness, among others. It is usually in youth where life might be the happiest stage of life
for almost everybody; however, as life goes on people’s lives begin incorporating burdens of
depression, sorrow, etc. Juliant Barness was right when he wrote 'Sometimes, I think
purpose of life is to reconcile us to its eventual loss by wearing us down, by proving-
however long it takes - that life isn't all it's cracked up to be'
