ELA 9 Group Project: Collective Identity

In groups of three or four, you will write a narrative response to the following question:

What is the importance of collective identity in shaping one’s character?

Then, you need to film/act out your story in whatever online method you prefer.
This could be: compiling TikTok videos, filmed with Flipgrid, put together using
iMove, have actors preform while someone narrates using a voiceover, etc. You
can choose whatever method works for online collaboration – just verify with me
first.

Please remember to follow all social distancing protocol. All collaboration

must be done online, even the filming. I will not be accepting projects where this
protocol has been breached.

Because you are working in groups, it may be difficult to use the personal
response bullseye, but I still suggest that you try – this will make the story more
compelling than a completely fictional story.

Narrative checklist:
□ Our story has a protagonist
□ Our story has a conflict that is resolved throughout the story
□ Our story has an effective beginning, middle, and ending
□ Our story addresses the theme and answers the question: what is the
importance of collective identity in shaping one’s character?
□ Our story has effective transitions (new line for new speaker)
□ Our story has a clear focus that is sustained throughout the narrative
□ Our story has proper sentence structure
□ Our story uses a creative and effective vocabulary
□ Our story is double spaced
□ Our story has effective transitions (new line for new speaker)
□ Our story has been edited for grammatical errors
□ Our story has our names in the top left corner

Filming checklist:
□ Our film tells our story creatively
□ Our film tells our story effectively
□ We collaborated on our film online, meaning no contact was shared

Group work checklist:

□ Our team collaborated effectively
□ Each group member had an equal role in the narrative writing/filming
process
□ Each group member communicated efficiently with one another
□ Each group member used their time wisely to compete the assignment

Evaluation:

You will be evaluated on two different areas:

- The quality of your narrative writing (uses same PAT rubric as essay)
- Your ability to work in your group*

*After the group work is completed, you will fill out a survey evaluating each of
your group members and assigning them a grade with an attached rationale. This
information will only be seen by me and will not be shared with your group
members; they will only see their grade. This means that just because you work in
a group together does not mean that you will receive the same grade.

Narrative Structure:
Think of your narrative like a three-act play.

Act 1: the beginning

- The beginning introduces the characters
- This beginning also introduces the conflict

Act 2: the middle

- The middle of your story develops the conflict (and therefore the characters)

Act 3: the end

- The end of your story will conclude the conflict and clearly demonstrates
that you have answered the question
- You can answer the question explicitly or implicitly, but it must be clear; if
you are unsure if your story addresses the question you can literally have a
character say “I learned that the importance of community is…” or have one
character give another advice (except more creatively, of course).

When you are planning with your group, try and plan out all three “acts” before
you start writing.
