Ms. Boudreau’s Classroom

March 2021

We are excited to start our adventure in the Ice Age! As all students are back, it is
exciting to see their collaboration and hear their conversations as they work. The
transition has been a smooth one. The patience and resilience of my students has
been so amazing to encounter!

Later this month, on March 31st, your child will be receiving his/her report card.
Please continue to work on skills that your child needs to master on a daily basis.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY:
The most efficient reading strategy is knowing a word by sight. Some
words in our language occur frequently and some are not easily sounded out.
These words are sometimes referred to as sight words. Fundations calls them trick
words. To help children practice automatic recall of sight words, we continue to
play games and sing songs to reinforce them. Periodically, sight word assessments
will be given to help hone in on which words your child needs to still practice.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FUNDATIONS:

Students are starting to decipher between vowel sounds using their letter boards.
Students enjoy adding the component of spelling cvc words
(consonant-vowel-consonant words). They are also enjoying learning their trick
words and finding them in sentences. Please remind your child to form letters
starting from the correct spot, ex) the skyline, planeline, etc. Letters never start on
the grassline.

WRITING:
Student’s handwriting continues to improve through the practice being done during
our Fundations block. When you combine this development with the continued
development of vocabulary and writing skills being worked on you get some pretty
amazing work products! Please continue to encourage your child to expand on
their sentence or write another sentence.

READING:
During their individualized reading lessons, students are continuing to improve
their reading skills. Reading “levels” will be assessed frequently to ensure each
student is being provided with instruction and books appropriate to their
instructional reading level. I will continue to send home a book each week and
assign a book on Raz Kids. Please return the book in the back on TUESDAYS!

MATH:
By this point in the year students are counting to 100 by 1s, 5s and 10s. Students
are continuing to practice number formation and still sometimes need a model for
some of the teen numbers. Students are able to “count on” from a given number
and write addition sentences based on ten frames. Please continue to practice
addition and subtraction facts.

IDEAS FOR HOME:

• Practice
simple “word problems” in context at home.
For example, while serving lunch you might say “If I give you 4 chicken nuggets
and you ask for 1 more, how many will you have?”
• Make a memory game using index cards fot the sight/trick words.

Wishlist: Paper towels, cleaning wipes, any size ziplock bags
