January 2021

This month, we finished learning about Japan and the ways of the Ninja! We
were introduced to Peanut the mouse in Night of the Ninjas. Peanut will go on
more adventures with Jack and Annie and we even have a pet mouse in the
classroom (don’t worry it’s a stuffed mouse!). After Ninjas, we will be exploring
the Amazon Rainforest! We will be building background knowledge using power
points about the rainforest. We continue to incorporate fun crafts to accompany
each story!

This is also an exciting time of year because we start learning to read! Your
child will soon have a book bag (a plastic bag this year), with books at their reading
level to practice at home!

Mrs. Pereira and I would like to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness and
generosity during the holiday season!

What’s happening in Fundations:

Fundations is getting exciting as we move from letter sounds to sounding out

words! We are also going to focus on upper case letters and practice their
formation. Students continue to be motivated to learn with Mama Owl and Baby
Owl! Thank you for the reinforcement at home!

What Reading & Writing Skills are being practiced?

This month I will be assessing your child’s reading level and your child will be
reading books at his/her level. Book bags (Gallon zip-lock bags) will also come home
to reinforce reading skills at home- be sure to return the bags & books each week!
Please continue to work on cvc words (consonant-vowel-consonant words, ec- cat,
mop) and reading to your child daily. In writing, we are working on writing two
sentences and writing all the sounds we hear in words. Please continue to practice
these skills at home.

What Math Skills are being practiced?

We continue with expanding our number sense. We played I Have Who Has
to help us practice counting by 1’s, and 10’s. We also sing many songs that reinforce
these skills. We have been working with 10 frames to help us combine numbers up
to 10. We are working on addition and beginning subtraction. Additionally, we have
continued to work on the correct formation of numbers.
