Malorie Blackman

Malorie Blackman is a black British writer. She writes books for children, teenagers and young adults. She
is famous for Pig Heart Boy, Cloudbusting and her Noughts and Crosses series.

Malorie grew up in Clapham, London. She always loved reading. She spent a lot of time in the library
because she didn’t have novels or story books at home. Her favourite stories were fairy tales and she
also loved comic novels. But there was one problem– all of the children in the books she read were
white. None of the characters looked like Malorie.

As a child, Malorie wanted to become a teacher, but when she left school, she became a computer
programmer. She enjoyed her job, but loved writing, too. She decided to write books for children.

It wasn’t easy to become a writer. Malorie wrote a collection of books for young children and then she
decided to write exciting novels for teenagers. Malorie’s books have black, white and Asian characters.
Some of her stories are about race.

Her first novel, Hacker was very popular and it won three awards. Now, there are more than 60 Malorie
Blackman books.
