The Tricycle Boy

At fourteen years old, Joselito was one of the youngest boys among the tricycle
drivers operating near Polo Market in Valenzuela. His mother died when he was ten. When his father
remarried and had other children of his own, Joselito preferred to stay with his aunt rather than join
the new family.
His aunt earned their living by collecting garbage and selling rugs. Joselito drove
a tricycle in the morning to help earn some money as he went to school in the afternoon.
Joselito had many customers. He was always pleasant and cheerful. He was very
helpful too. He carried the customers’ bags. Sometimes he gave some school children free ride in his
tricycle. Through his efforts, Joselito not only helped his aunt but made her happy too.

WHAT’S IN

Characters are what make stories. Without a character, there is no story to tell, only a lot of
scenery. Many characters in literature, television series, and movies have a huge impact on people.
Some people like to live their lives through these characters, who appear to have more exciting
lives. Also, these characters may seem so real and inspirational, that people forget they are fictional.

Characters become so important to the audience, that cities across the country hold
conventions in which people pay a lot of money to dress and act as their favorite characters from
multiple types of shows, particularly of the comic magazine genre (type of literature).

Note to the Teacher.

A character is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story. Writers use

characters to perform the actions and speak dialogue, moving the story along a plot line. A
story can have only one character (protagonist) and still be a complete story. This character’s
conflict may be an inner one (within him/herself), or a conflict with something natural, such
as climbing a mountain. Most stories have multiple characters interacting, with one of them as
the antagonist, causing a conflict for the protagonist.

WHAT’S NEW
It is very important for us to know all about the characters as an element in a story. It will
help us react and find evidence that will justify their role.

A character is any animate figure within a story. So, things like plants and non-living objects
would not normally be considered characters, unless of course these things have been personified
and brought to life.

A character’s development speaks of the depth and complexity of a character. It’s possible
that a character starts out thoroughly developed, or it may be that the author chooses to slowly
develop that character as the plot unfolds. It can also be the case that a character starts out highly
developed, but the reader is not made aware of certain aspects of their development until later.
Main characters are essential to every story. Main characters are the characters with the most
amount of influence on the plot or the characters that the plot has the most influence on.

WHAT IS IT

There are a few different ways in which you can classify main characters in a story: flat or round
characters, protagonist, or antagonist, and dynamic or static characters.

● Flat characters are often described as characters that are two-dimensional. Meaning
that they lack real depth or are not super complex, nor do they show much development
throughout the story.

● Round characters can be thought of as three dimensional. These are the characters that
are realistically complex and have depth that is identifiable and distinctly humanlike.

● A protagonist is always a main character in the story. The protagonist prompts a story’s
action and captivates the reader’s attention.

● The antagonist is directly opposite to the protagonist. The antagonist works against the
protagonist. They are usually the bad guy or girl in the story.

● Dynamic characters are directly connected to character development and refer to a

character who undergoes change within a story. They are characters that the reader
watches develop. Most often a protagonist is a dynamic character. For example, a character
may start out closed off, and throughout the course of the story they begin to let some of
those walls down.

WHAT’S MORE

Characters are essential part of any literary work. They make the story possible based
on how the character is built can help to bring the story to life.

fell into a ditch and hurt himself. The boy cried, “Ah! I can’t move my arm.”
Leo would never help anyone but that day, he felt sad for the boy. So, he rushed to him and
helped him stand. He said to the boy “Looks like you have a fractured hand. Sit behind me and I’ll
carry you to the hospital.”
