LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

SHEET
ENGLISH 7 – 1st Quarter – Week 4
Name: ____________________ Grade/Section: _________ Parent’s Signature: _________
Competency:
Use direct and reported speech appropriately in varied contexts (EN7G-IIa-1)
Objective: At the end of the week, you shall have:
A. Determine direct and reported speech correctly,
B. Show appreciation of positive traits and values of Filipinos using direct or reported speech.
C. Construct sentences using direct and reported speech.

Instruction: READ the Enclosure to understand the lesson and WRITE your answer in this sheet.

Remember these:
Every time, you have conversations that require you to restate what another person says,
asks, commands, or requests you need to follow some rules. With this, it is necessary that you
have to enhance your skills in reporting statements, questions, and requests or commands.

Direct speech repeats or quotes, the exact words spoken or the actual statement of the
speaker. When we use the direct speech in writing, we enclose the words spoken with quotation
marks (“ “).
Examples:
1. Mother says,” We are facing a financial crisis nowadays”.
2. The teachers suggested,” Despite of the pandemic crisis, students must
continue their studies”.

Reported or indirect speech is derived from a sentence consisting of two parts: the explanatory
part and the quoted part. The explanatory part explains or tells who says, asks, commands, or
requests while the exact words of the speaker is the quoted part. Inverted commas are not used.

Examples:
1. Mother says that we are facing financial crisis nowadays.
2. The teachers suggested that despite of the pandemic crisis, students must
continue their studies.

When changing direct statement to reported statement the following should be observed:

1. When the quoted part is declarative, it is transformed into a “that clause.”

Example:
My father says,” We are facing a global pandemic this year.”
Reported:
My father says that we are facing a global pandemic this year.

2. When the quoted part is interrogative, it is transformed according to the following:

a. A “yes” or “no” question in the quoted part, is transformed into an “ if – clause” or “
whether clause”.
Example:
Anjela asks,” Is Covid -19 dangerous?”
Reported:
Anjela asks if Covid – 19 is dangerous.
Anjela asks whether Covid – 19 is dangerous or not.

3. In the quoted part the verb should be consistent in tense with the verb in the
introductory part.
- A present tense of verb in the introductory part calls for a present tense verb
in the quoted part.
Example:
Lito remarks, “I like folk dances.”
Reported:
Lito remarks that he likes folk dances.

- A present tense in the introductory part and a present perfect tense in the
quoted part retains the present tense in the reported speech.

Example:
Teacher Mae suggests, “We have worked hard to finish the exemplar.”
Reported:
Teacher Mae suggests that they have worked hard to finish the exemplar.
- A past tense in the introductory part and a present tense in the quoted part
need a change from the present tense in the quoted part to past tense.

Example:
Teacher Mira explained, “Crafting an exemplar is not easy.”
Reported: Teacher Mira explained that crafting an exemplar was not easy.
- For the past tense in the introductory part and a future tense in the quoted
part , change the helping verb will and shall into would and should respectively.

Example:
JP said,” I will prefer modular learning modality this opening of classes.”
Reported: JP said that he would prefer modular learning modality this opening of classes.

4. In the quoted part the verb remains present even if the verb in the introductory part is
past tense when the quoted part says or asks for a fact or truth.

Example:
Teacher Sherry said, “There is no face to face learning modality unless there is a
vaccine.
Reported: Teacher Sherry said that there is no face to face learning modality unless there is a
vaccine.
If the quoted part is an imperative sentence, it is changed into an infinitive phrase to
make a reported declarative sentence.

Example:
Our English teacher told us,” Make a creative portfolio in the English module.”
Reported: Our English teacher told us to make a creative portfolio in the English module.
5. The pronouns in the quoted part are replaced accordingly:
- You with I or we if it is used as a subject.
Example:

My adviser asks, “What kind of learning modality do you prefer this school year?”
Reported: The adviser asks what kind of learning modality I prefer this school year.
- You with me or us if it used as an object.

Example:
Mer asks, “What inspires you in your studies?”
Reported: Mer asks what inspires me in my studies. - Me with
her or him

Example:
My mother asks, “Why you have abandoned me?”
Reported: My mother asks why I have abandoned
