each other. He wondered what they were talking about. His curiosity started then. He began listening
to others’ conversations, and day by day, new words were being added on his list. He was very
patient searching for words. One day, he visited Merriam Webster, the most intelligent man in the
world to ask for help.
“I have listed words but how could this be used by the people easily?”, asked by Dicson. The
two great men arrived into the idea of listing words in a way the alphabet is ordered. Dicson never
stopped looking for words. He didn’t notice that the numbers of words on his list are becoming more
and more. People used to visit his house for one reason. All of them asked the same question,
“Dicson what is the meaning of these words?” Days went on, Dicson had become known in the world
as a man of words.
In honor of his great work and passion for words, the book that contains thousands of words
and meanings was named after him. It was called dictionary. “For him, words were already part of

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry had been a year old the night that Voldemort--the most powerful Dark wizard for a
century, a wizard who had been gaining power steadily for eleven years--arrived at his house and
killed his father and mother. Voldemort had then turned his wand on Harry; he had performed the
curse that had disposed of many full-grown witches and wizards in his steady rise to power--and,
incredibly, it had not worked.

Sunset is the time of day when our sky meets the outer space solar winds. There are blue,
pink, and purple swirls, spinning and twisting, like clouds of balloons caught in a whirlwind. The sun
moves slowly to hide behind the line of horizon, while the moon races to take its place in prominence
atop the night sky. People slow to a crawl, entranced, fully forgetting the deeds that must still be
done. There is coolness, calmness, when the sun does set.

On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 spacecraft launched from the Kennedy Space Center in
Florida. Its mission was to go where no human being had gone before—the moon! The crew
consisted of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. The spacecraft landed on the moon in
the Sea of Tranquility, a basaltic flood plain, on July 20, 1969. The moonwalk took place the following
day. On July 21, 1969, at precisely 10:56 EDT, Commander Neil Armstrong emerged from the Lunar
Module and took his famous first step onto the moon’s surface. He declared, “That’s one small step
for man, one giant leap for mankind.” It was a monumental moment in human history!

The school fair is right around the corner, and tickets have just gone on sale. Even though you
may be busy, you will still want to reserve just one day out of an entire year to relax and have fun with
us. Even if you don’t have much money, you don’t have to worry. A school fair is a community event,
and therefore prices are kept low. Perhaps, you are still not convinced. Maybe you feel you are too
old for fairs, or you just don’t like them. Well, that’s what my grandfather thought, but he came to last
year’s school fair and had this to say about it: “I had the best time of my life!” While it’s true that you
may be able to think of a reason not to come, I’m also sure that you can think of several reasons why
you must come.  We look forward to seeing you at the school fair! 8

I do well in school, and people think I am smart because of it. But it’s not true. In fact, three years
ago I struggled in school. However, two years ago I decided to get serious about school and made a
few changes. First, I decided I would become interested in whatever was being taught, regardless of
what other people thought. I also decided I would work hard every day and never give up on any
assignment. I decided to never, never fall behind. Finally, I decided to make school a priority over
friends and fun. After implementing these changes, I became an active participant in classroom
discussions. Then my test scores began to rise. I still remember the first time that someone made fun
of me because “I was smart.” How exciting! It seems to me that being smart is simply a matter of
working hard and being interested. After all, learning a new video game is hard work even when you
are interested. Unfortunately, learning a new video game doesn’t help you get into college or get a
good job.

Last year was the first time I had ever been the new kid at school. For the first four days, I was
completely alone. I don’t think I even spoke to a single person. Finally, at lunch on the fifth day, Karen
Watson walked past her usual table and sat down right next to me. Even though I was new, I had
already figured out who Karen Watson was. She was popular. Pretty soon, all of Karen’s friends were
sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends with Karen, but after lunch that day, it
seemed like all sorts of people were happy to be my friend. You cannot convince me that Karen did
not know what she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a great deal about what it
means to be a true leader.

 There are a lot of ways on how to know and understand the meaning of unfamiliar or
difficult words.

Activity 2:
A. Encircle the word with the suffix in each group of words below and underline the root word.
Common suffixes include; er, or, ness, ment, ion, ist, ance, or ence.

Example: celebrate cheer celebration

Begin here:
1. Big Bigger Large
2. Grow fertilization fertile
3. Going move movement
4. Brilliant smart Brilliance
5. Artist arts art
B. Choose words from the box to complete the sentences below.

Careful quickly quietly loudly slowly

1. Jun is a quick writer. He writes __________________.
2. “Please be quiet,” said Ms. Tess. “Work _________________”.
3. Tim is a slow reader. He reads ___________________.
4. Lila takes care with her work. She is __________________.
5. Peter has a loud voice. He talks _________________. 4
C. Choose the proper prefix in the box to complete each word. Write your answer on the blank.

fore- pre- re- un- dis- mis- sub-

Example: Before you take off your shoes, you need to untie them.

Begin here:

1. Make sure you ___turn the library book on time!

2. If you want to be ready for something, you need to ___pare.
3. I looked over my writing and found a ____spelled word.
4. You may be correct, but I ____agree with you.
5. We checked the ____cast before we planned the event.

2. Denotation: the dictionary and literal meaning of a word

Connotation: the emotional / contextual / cultural meaning attached to a word; shades and
degrees of meaning. It may be positive, negative, or neutral connotation.

Note: To fully understand a word and use it correctly, you need to know both its denotation (the
standard definition) and its connotation (the feelings associated with it). If you aren't fully aware of a
word's connotation, you may choose an inappropriate synonym in your writing, which can lead to
confusion or even to your reader taking offense.

Examples:

A. Home, House, Residence, Dwelling

Denotation: These words all mean a place in which someone lives.

Connotation: Home: cozy, loving, comfortable, security, images or feelings of people
you associate with it.

B. The words "group," "clique" and "club." All three have basically the same denotative meaning:
a set of more than one person. Each of these words has a different connotative meaning,
however.

"Group" has a neutral connotation, because it simply describes a number of people. It does not
inspire either positive or negative feelings.
"Clique," also means a group of people, but it carries a negative connotation. This is because
"clique" is typically used in circumstances where the group is known for excluding others. This
word should be used carefully: If you want to be thought of as a welcoming group, the negative
connotation of this word will turn people off!

Likewise, "club" also refers to a group of people, but this word has a more positive connotation
because a club is a collection of people that voluntarily come together for a shared passion or
purpose.

3. Analogy- is way of comparison: it is when one idea, concept, or thing is compared to

something else that is significantly different from the first.

A. We have different ways of comparisons and figures of speech to help us make analogies. Similes
and metaphors help to construct an analogy. A simile easily builds an analogy by making a
comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as.” A metaphor crafts an analogy by comparing
two things without using the words “like” or “as.”

Examples:

He is as strong as an ox.

 The analogy compares the man’s strength to the strength of an animal, suggesting he is very
strong.

That box is as light as a feather.

 This is common analogy. The weight of the box is being compared to the weight of a feather.
Since a feather is very light, the analogy suggests that the box is also very light.

Love is a game. Sometimes you win–sometimes you lose.

 The analogy compares love to how a game works. The analogy suggests that love is chance,
and sometimes you find someone you love. Other times you do not or things do not work out
with a person.

My children are my plants. I must nurture them to grow strong.

 This speaker is making an analogy between children and plants. The analogy works because
we think about how much effort and care we must put into plants in order to make them grow.
The speaker finds that children are similar in that they must be cared for in order to grow as
well.

B. We can see analogies working in other fields of study, and sometimes in tests, as logic tests or
puzzles. In these types of analogies, you are given a train of words. Two words show the analogy.
Then you are given and word and must find another word that relates to the word in a similar
way the first pair did.

Examples:

Sun : Day :  Moon : _____________________

 The answer in the analogy would be “night.” the first two words show us the analogy. The word
sun is compared to the word day. When we think of the world “moon,” we should then think of
something similar, like “night.”

Winter : Summer  :  Wet : __________________

 The correct answer would be the word “dry.” The first pair of words gives us the analogy
working with the words. If we are given the word “winter” and the word “summer,” we
understand that the two seasons are not similar to each other. The analogy works by
comparing two opposites. Therefore, if we are given the word “wet,” we know that we should
select a word that makes an analogy between two dissimilar things. The opposite of wet, would
be “dry.”

Activity 4: Complete each analogy by writing the best answer.
