Introductory Message
Welcome to English Grade Four!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative


efforts of the Schools Division of Aklan and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management
Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials


aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace
and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will
also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge
and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The English Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue


learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned
to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

II. Background Information for Learners


To be able to understand fully an article or a paragraph, it
is important for the reader to know/determine the tone, mood and
purpose of the author. In this learning activity sheet, you are
going to learn what the author’s reason for writing a text.

1. Tone is the attitude of the author toward the subject,


the reader, or the characters.
Examples:
angry, cheerful, formal, ironic, authoritative, gloomy,
sad, serious, important, amused, humorous,
contentment

2. Mood is the feeling the reader gets from reading the


author’s words.
Examples:
romantic, sorrowful, guilty, fanciful, gloomy, happy,
joyful, depressed, suspenseful, sentimental,
mysterious, anxious, funny, satisfied

3. Purpose of the author is the author’s reason for writing.
 To Persuade is to encourage the reader; the author
would like the reader to agree with his or her opinion
Examples:
advertisements, movie reviews, academic
arguments, political speeches, commercials,
newspaper, editorials
 To Inform is to give factual information; the author
would like to teach the readers something
Examples:
textbooks, encyclopedias, cookbooks, posters,
pamphlets,

 To Entertain is to give laughter or relief; the author


would like to tell stories and make readers laugh
Examples: novels, stories, poems, plays, jokes,
books, comic strips

Activity 3
Directions: Read each paragraph. Think about the authors’
purpose in writing them. Write E if the purpose is to entertain, I
if to inform, P if to persuade.

___1. The earth is made up of three layers: the crust, the


mantle and the core. The outer layer, called the crust, is
between 16 and 40 kilometers thick. It floats on a thicker layer
known as the mantle, which is 2,895 kilometers thick. The core,
which is 3,475 kilometers thick, is surrounded by the mantle.
The innermost part is solid (the inner core) while the outer part
is liquid (the outer core).

____2. Animals live in a particular place called habitat where


they can find the food they eat. There are live animals and
found in the pond, forest, seas, and grassland. The food is their
source of energy. In order to survive, they need a continuous
supply of food, Thus, obtaining food is their life activities.

I could eat it all day from the minute I wake
I wouldn’t miss peas or carrots or grapes

____4. Cooking is an important part of food preparation that
involves applying heat, in most cases this transforms the
chemical makeup of food, altering its texture, flavor, nutritional
properties and appearance.

____5. Everyone should think twice before deciding to eat fast


food. There are many health risks when it comes to eating food
that’s made within a matter of seconds. The food is not properly
taken care of, which leads all the way back to where the food is
originally produced. Even if it is easy to buy and cheap, one
should carefully think before they eat fast food.
