Compound Sentences Showing Cause and Effect

Compound Sentence
• is a sentence that has at least two
independent clauses joined by coordinating
conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet, or
so. (FANBOYS)
• A compound sentence can be used to show
cause and effect.

Compound Sentence
• is a sentence that has at least two
independent clauses joined by coordinating
conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet, or
so. (FANBOYS)
• A compound sentence can be used to show
A compound sentence has 2 independent clauses. cause and effect.
Each clause can stand by itself as a simple
sentence. And we combine two independent clauses
by using coordinating conjunction or the FANBOYS.

Question: Do you know what is a coordinating


conjunction?
Teacher, it connects words.
Very Good! Coordinating conjunction connects
words, phrases, and clauses that are coordinate to
each other.

Are you familiar with the use of the words in the


acronym FANBOYS?

Okay, let us familiarize the use of the acronym Not yet teacher.
FANBOYS.

1. The word FOR means the same as because.


For example:
 I drank some water, for I was thirsty.

2. The word AND is used to add one thing to


another.
Example:
 A girl ate lots of candy, and she got a
stomachache.

3. The word NOR is used to present an alternative


negative idea to an already stated negative idea.
Example:
 He didn’t study last night, nor did he read
his book.

4. The word BUT means the same as YET. They


both show contrast.
Example:
 Computer games are fun, but it is addictive.

5. The word OR presents an alternative or a choice.


Example:
 He can buy the book, or he can borrow it
from the library.

6. The word YET is the same as BUT.


Example:
 Computer games are fun, yet it is addictive.

7. The word SO indicates effect, result, or


consequence.
Example:
 It was cold outside, so she put on a
sweater.

Now that you are familiar with the words, let us now
form a sentence using the images below.

compound sentence.

Cause- Explains why something happen.


For example:

Shankar was in pain for he fell down the hill.

see what an effect is.

Effect- Explains what happened.


For example:
