Let’s Recall
A persuasive essay is a composition which aims to convince its
readers to believe a certain idea or take action regarding an issue.
It has three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.
The introduction presents the topic of the composition and gives a brief
overview of it. The body then explains, defends, and elaborates on the topic.
Lastly, the conclusion contains the summary of the most important points
of the composition. It may also have a message or question that will get the
readers thinking.
Questions:
1. What is the writer’s idea on the topic: Should cellphones be allowed in
school?
2. How did the writer introduce the topic?
3. In the body of the composition, what are the points that the writer used to
support the idea?
4. How did the writer end the composition?
5. Do you agree with the writer’s views about cellphone use in schools? Why?
Why not?
Before you can write a composition, you have to plan how you are going to
organize your ideas.
One of these strategies is to prepare an outline. An outline is a numbered
or lettered list that notes down the most important points of a composition. It helps
the writer plan the organization of the ideas that will be included in the
composition.
The main purpose of an outline is to list only the most important information
in a text.
Major and minor ideas may be marked using numbers, letters, bullets, or
Roman numerals.
Minor ideas and supporting details should be indented properly.
An outline is short and concise.
Before the persuasive essay: Ban Cellphones in School is written, the writer
used an outline. Study the writer’s outline.
I. Introduction
1. Cellphones should be banned.
2. It can cause distraction.
II. Body
1. Students will lose their attention.
2. Students will play online games and use social media.
III. Conclusion
1. It can affect studies badly

Remember that you can still revise the contents of an outline for a
persuasive essay while you are preparing for your composition depending on the
ideas that you want to include.
Aside from the outline, you can also use graphic organizers. Graphic
organizers are visual aids that help writers organize ideas, see relationships
and retain information. Study how ideas are organized in a graphic organizer

stating the stand, supporting it with major ideas and explaining further by putting
details. Then, the writer restates the stand in the conclusion.
