Adverbs of Intensity!

1 Using Adverbs of Intensity

In this module, you are to use one of the kinds of adverb- adverbs of
intensity- in composing clear and coherent sentences.

Notes to the Teacher


Adverbs are used in sentences to provide additional
detail. For adverbs of intensity, they describe the
degree of the quality of the action, adjective or
another adverb.

HELPING THE FRONTLINERS


One extremely hot afternoon, Francis heard the news about the current
pandemic brought by COVID-19 and then he decided to talk to his mother.
Francis: Mom, can we help the doctors, nurses and medical staff in a nearby
hospital? I'm sure they'll be absolutely thankful if we give them packed foods.
Mom: Where would we get enough money for your plans? Maybe we can have a
fundraising event or we could ask my friends if they can donate something.
Francis: That's a very good idea, Mom. I'll be sending also our doctors and
nurses letters to thank them for protecting us.
Mom: Okay! That’s nice. I'm just so proud of you.
Francis: Thanks, Mom! I will be certainly happy to help them. They are too
brave to risk their lives for us.
Mom: Okay we would talk about it later. I just need to talk to my friends for our
plan, so go ahead and make your letters right now.

Read the following phrases from the selection.

Note that your answers extremely, absolutely, very,


certainly and too tell to what extent a quality exists. For example, in
the phrase extremely hot, extremely tells to what extent the
temperature is, in the phrase absolutely thankful, absolutely tells to

what extent is the quality of being thankful. The same is true with
the other italicized expressions like very, certainly and too.

Expressions like extremely, absolutely, very, certainly and


too are called adverbs of intensity or adverbs of degree. They are also
called intensifiers.

Adverbs of intensity usually describe adjectives and adverbs in


the sentences.

Here is the list of commonly-used adverbs of intensity.

almost much
completely hardly
extremely little
quite merely
rather scarcely
so sufficiently
somewhat partly
too greatly
very fully
barely exceedingly
totally absolutely
just

Adverbs of intensity are usually placed before the adjective or


adverb they are modifying.

Ex. Today is extremely hot. (adverb of degree describing


adjective)
Carl runs very fast. (adverb of degree describing another
adverb)

FINDING A NEW FRIEND

Ashera woke up quite late that day. She skipped her breakfast. She walked
very fast to catch up the tricycle. She headed to school with empty stomach.
During recess, she looked for her lunchbox. It was then she realized that
she forgot it due to the rush. What was left in her pocket was barely enough for
snacks.
Czarina noticed that Ashera was somewhat restless and approached her.
“Ashera, here take some of my sandwich. Don’t worry, I still have another
one in my lunch box,” Czarina said.
“Thank you so much, Czarina. You’re too kind,” Ashera said.
Czarina replied, “You’re welcome. Come on, let us take have our snacks in
our school canteen.”
Ashera said, “Sure. Thanks again.”
Ashera knew that she found a new friend in the classroom.

An adverb of intensity is a word that is placed before either an adjective or


an adverb to tell to what extent a quality exists. It is also called adverb of degree
or intensifier.
