Identifying Point-of-View
I.LEARNING CONTEXT:
In a narrative, the point-of-view refers to who is telling the story. The point-of-view
in a story refers to position of the narrator in relation to the story.

Three Major Kinds of Point of View

1. First-Person Point-of-View
The narrator is involved in the story. First-person stories use first-person
pronouns like I, me, my, myself, mine, us, we, our and ourselves. The
narrator is a participant in the story as witnessing and interacting with the
events in the story.
Example:
I looked down from the rocky ledge. I could see everything around
me from this location. I hope that I wouldn’t lose my balance.
2. Second-Person Point-of-View
The reader’s actions are narrated. Second-person point-of-view pulls the
reader into the story with the pronouns you, your and yourself/
yourselves.
Example:
You feel a sense of excitement as you look at the beautiful
sceneries. This will be the day you have been looking forward to!
3. Third-Person Point-of-View
The narrator is outside of the story. Stories told in third person use third
person pronouns like he, she, his, him, her/hers, they, their, them, it and
its.
