Love is like playing chess. At times, you can win or lose. One wrong move will make
your game miserable. Just like in love, it is a symbol of courage that whatever it takes

2
you need to accept the decision that both of you made. You can’t go back in time and
redo everything. Once you have been there, face it.

Love is full of unexpected twists and turns. Anyone can comment, guess and speculate,
but only lovers truly know what is going on and what move to make.

Activity 3: Describing the Text
How my brother Leon brought home a wife
Manuel E. Arguilla

Directions: Give an initial reaction to the story and describe its general content and
purpose.

When I first read the story, I was amazed at the words used by the author. He
used words that have a deep meaning but are easy to understand when you read all the
text.

At first, Baldo described the one who stepped down the carretela. She is a city
girl, and her beauty stands out from the crowd.I thought it was the girl he was looking
for, but his brother, Leon, also arrived with her. They rode to Labang when it was time to
go home.Their father had no intention of taking the usual route. Therefore, he told Baldo
to follow the rocky Waig road instead of the Camino Real. This is to see if Maria has the
long-term patience to travel on bumpy roads. As time went by, the conversation between
his brother and Maria was good, until Leon noticed why they went on in that way. Baldo
explained that it was the idea of their father. Meanwhile, they continued on that road, full
of excitement despite the darkness, but the stars served as a light. When Leon asked if
she missed city life, Maria replied that she was glad they weren't there. However, she felt
hesitant about whether they would like her and Leon said that there was nothing to
worry about. When they got home, their father asked Baldo if Maria was afraid on their
way home. Baldo narrated the scenario earlier and his father was glad that Maria was
the typical girl he wanted for his son.

The purpose of the story is about sacrificing. Maria was the type of city girl who
was willing to give up her life to be with someone she cared about. It is difficult to adjust
4
to a new environment, but if you truly love the person, you will do your best. The story
teaches us to be contented in life. Living in a province is not difficult as long as you
know how to survive doing simple things. For those who live there, city lights, buildings,
cars, and crowded people are normal. But for those who live in province its too much. A
simple life is a happier one because you will always be thankful for the life that God
gave you.

Activity 3: Q and A
The Small Key
Paz M. Latorena

Directions: Answer the following questions.

1. Share your ideas on the quote “Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it

was hard line to walk.” – Stephanie Meyer, New Moon

The phrase above was about the fear of something. Maybe it's about the bad
memories that happen in one person's life. Those memories cause a trauma that no one
wants to go through again. All of us have these kinds of moments that we don’t want to
remember again because it will lessen our self-esteem. Building confidence after that
event is such a hard thing, since it requires time to forget it. However, in order for us to
move forward in our lives, it is necessary to focus on our present situation and erase
those dilemmas that happened in the past.

2. Answer the question in one word only, “What does KEY mean to you?” Then,
draw a key and put there your given meaning with explanation.

GOAL.

5
For
me, the key represents my goal in life. It serves as motivation for me to work harder on
my academic journey. The key is not just a normal key for me, because it symbolizes
my dream that I aim to achieve. When I already have a key, that means I am stable and
ready to provide for the needs and wants of my family.  Meanwhile, I'm creating my own
key with the help of people who are always there to cheer me up.
