CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF STUDY

1.1. Background of Study

Listening skill is one of the four basic language skills in English besides reading,
writing, and speaking. Listening ability is needed by the students for facing both local and
national tests of English tested in written form so that listening should be learned earlier since
kindergarten until the higher education level.

Listening is the process of understanding the meaning by hearing the sound. According
to Rost (2011:279) who says that listening is the mental process of constructing meaning
from spoken input. Listening is often considered the most difficult skill. The learner cannot
get the listening achievement which is the most important aspect in listening comprehension,
especially in English. This is the duty of the teacher to solve the problem.

Sometimes problems in listening ability to students do not only come from the student's
internal factors but can also come from students' external factors such as facilities like
headphones do not function well but the process of study is running well. However, there are
some common problems faced by students in learning listening skills. One of them is they are
not familiar with the spoken words and foremost they miss catch the word.

Concerning the problem, it is needed to provide the students with good teaching
procedures by selecting appropriate methods to help them learn to listen. For this reason, this
research is aimed at observing and making learning media to improve their listening
comprehension by providing the appropriate teaching materials and positive classroom
situations where the students could be accustomed to English listening. The Audio-lingual
method has some benefits, one of them makes students have a good comprehension in
listening.

Phonetic symbols are written characters used in phonetic transcription of speech which
represent a particular sound. Phonetic symbols show how the word is pronounced, for
example, the word flag [flæg]. The phonetic symbols show how to say “flag” correctly.

The popularity of social media is also felt by young people including students. Students
might spend their time almost around the clock to use social media via their laptops or mobile
devices. Therefore, this popularity can be adapted by the teacher to develop certain activities
in language learning. One basic reason to use social media is it is familiar to almost students.
It also doesn’t cost and require minimal training. Social media allows students to access
enormous variety of learning materials in most of the cases free of charge.

As one of platforms social media, instagram is become widely used by the students. It
provides users an instantaneous way to capture and share their life moments with friends
through a series of (filter manipulated) pictures and videos.

This media makes students easily in understanding phonetic transcription and also they
can listen to the articulation clearly anywhere and everywhere. It is caused they are not only
studying but they also play with the social media and it will give the variation in learning.

Based on the problem identified and the previous researches above, the researcher is
interested in conducting a teaching learning media by using social media. This research also
uses the audio-lingual method to improve students’ listening ability by phonetic symbols
within the tittle “Phonetic Symbol Instagram Story Quiz to Improve The Students’ Listening
Skill”

1.2. Limitation of the Problem

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1. Definition of Listening

Listening is a difficult skill in second language learning. The difficulty is caused by

many factors varying from the difference of sound between the second language learners’
first language and the second language he or she is learning, his or her lack of vocabulary, his
or her grammatical unawareness, to pragmatic differences between two languages.
Accordingly, learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) need to be prepared to handle
tests in listening comprehension (Nasrudin, 2013: 3).

There are four steps in listening activity process. They are hearing, understanding,
evaluating, and responding (Greene & Petty, 1971).

1. Hearing – it deals with a series of sounds that involves with the words and
sentences.
2. Understanding – it means that the meaning of those words and sentences are
understood.
3. Evaluating – it means that the meaning gained is evaluated the total communication
is accepted or rejected.
4. Responding – a response is made to what is heard by further thought, bodily
movement, facial expression or audible reaction.

From these four steps, they describe that a process of listening is through stages then it
also describes the process of transmission of the actual meaning which is encoded through
sounds. Each of them shows their own function. Moreover, the responding stage takes the
main role that it measures the hearers’ listening comprehension whether they comprehend
what is intended by the speaker or not.

2.2. Definition of Phonetics

Phonetics is a science that studies phones or speech sounds. Phonetics is the study of
the production, transmission, and reception of speech sounds. The phonetic symbols are the
written character used in phonetic transcription. The symbols represent a particular speech
sound.
Phonetic symbols will take advantage of its application. Phonetic symbols are written
characters used in phonetic transcription of speech which represent a particular sound
(Meyer, 2009, p. 196). Phonetic symbols show how the word is pronounced, for example, the
word flag [flæg].

The phonetic symbols show how to pronounce “flag” correctly. Additionally, to help
better in pronunciation, phonetic symbols instagram story quiz show the appropriateness of
word pronunciation. This is the notion of how phonetic symbols can describe the word. When
learners describe or produce sounds, it is necessary to know the individual word is and how
each sound differs from all other. The distinctions of the words may not be seen clearly when
they are spoken and they somehow ambiguous. It is because the same sound words do not
represent the same pattern of their sound words. The words “bed” are pronounced similarly to
“bad”. Phonetically, these words are almost the same sound patterns; however, they will look
distinctly if phonetic symbols are presented: bed /’bed/ and bad /’bad/ / The idea of the
phonetic symbols used is to distinguish how words are pronounce and represented in English
alphabets. Students may encounter difficulties in sound patterns. Some English words have
different spelling and pronunciation, but some of them may have the same pronunciation.
However, some English dialects make no distinction in a case of pronunciation even some
speakers distinguish the words, for example, the word “cot” and “caught” (Odden, 2005, p.
21).

2.3. Definition of Instagram

Instagram is the one of mobile application which quite popular in the young people
recent days. Students can get knowledge about the new issues which happen outside the
classroom. Instagram can become an appropriate medium for English learning process
Instagram was launced on October 6, 2010. It is one platforms of social media which its user
can share photos, and starting from mid-2013 instagram’s services expanded to sharing 15-
second video. Since that time, the number of people used instagram increased rapidly. From
the instagram statisctic showed that it has attracted more than 150 million active users, with
an average of 55 million photos uploaded by users per day, and more than 16 billion photos
shared so far (Instagram 2013)

2.4. Conceptual Framework

This research would like to use these theories bellow as the foundation of this study to
answer the questions of this research. This research will investigate the use of Phonetic
Symbol Instagram Story Quiz to Improve Students’ Listening Skill
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1. Reseach Method

This research focused on the use of Phonetic Symbol Instagram Story Quiz to Improve
Students’ Listening Skill. This research emphasized on strengthening the students’ listening
skill through phonetic symbols that it enabled them to identify and easily recognize the
spoken words. By having such solution, the students were able to identify propersound of
words then they got the understanding of the spoken text.

3.2. Population and Sample

The participants of the research were the seventh year students of SMAS
Muhammadiyah 12 Binjai. Based on the pre-observation, they were chosen because of
some considerations; listening practices were reluctantly done since the students could not
be able to catch the words appropriately that it made them difficult to listen and comprehend
the meaning, and the teacher’s report showed that they got thelowest score among the other
classes.

3.3. Reaserch Instrument

The data of this research were taken from students’ listening test and
observation. The test was achievement test whichmeasured the students’ listening ability
after the treatment using phonetic symbols through audiolingual method. Meanwhile, the
observation referred to observing the students whether they enabled to identify between the
words and their phonetic symbols, enable to differentiate phonetic symbols in one word to
another word, and enable to identify and comprehend some words through spoken text.
