The Blonde
From the 13th to 20th
century, an certain
image of the “ideal
woman” dominated
European culture.
Women with blonde
hair and fair skin were

Body Image:
The Male
The male body image has
shifted slowly over the
centuries. Louis XIV of
France (1638-1715)
introduced high heels in
order to show off his
calves. Today, huge arms
and a “six-pack” are
promoted as ideals of male
health and beauty.

Who decides what “good”

Body Image Circa 1900

The business suit was invented by BEAU BRUMMEL in 19th century
England and has become a standard dress-wear for men worldwide.
The suit represents power, class and success, shaping male
self-image on a socio-economic level.

The “Gibson Girl” may be the first American female body image.
Invented by a magazine illustrator in the 1890’s, the GG combined a
"fragile lady" ideal with "voluptuous woman." She was tall with ample
bosom, hips, buttocks and a narrow waist. She wore a corset with
style (even if she could not breathe).

The Gibson Girl was upper middle class and perfectly dressed;
athletic and never having to work; calm in spirit, confident and
seeking personal fulfillment. She could sexually dominate men, who
became idiots in her presence. She could go to college to find a
husband, but would never vote. Ultimately, she was a conservative
opponent of women’s rights and supporter of male patriarchy.
