B. Read the passage again and underline the words that are new to you.
Assumption : An assumption is something that you assume to be the case, even without
proof. For example, people might make the assumption that you're a nerd
if you wear glasses, even though that's not true. Or very nice.
Malleable : A malleable metal is able to be pounded or pressed into various
shapes, and a malleable personality is capable of being changed or
trained. It's easier to learn when you're young and malleable.
Devotion : commitment to some purpose
Urge : force or impel in an indicated direction
Psychology : Psychology refers to the study of human behavior and the human mind,
or the mental attitude of a group.
D. Write a new sentence for each word above. The sentences should show that you understand
the meaning of each word as it is used in the passage.
Assumption : “your assumption that I would agree was unwarranted”
Malleable : “malleable metals such as gold”
Devotion : “the devotion of his time and wealth to science”
Urge : “I urged him to finish his studies”
Psychology : Your parents will find it hard to understand the psychology of the
teenager.

D. Write a new sentence for each word above. The sentences should show that you
understand the meaning of each word as it is used in the passage.
Symbolic : “the spinning wheel was as symbolic of colonical Massachusetts as the
codfish”
Manipulate : “He manipulated public opinion in his favor”
Demonstration : “the lecture was accompanied by dramatic demonstrations”
Household : “It was a good Christian household”
Inflict : If you cause anything bad to happen to a person, animal, or even an
object, you inflict that badness on them.
Exercise 3
A. Write the words you chose in Exercises 1 and 2. Choose five or more of those words and
make study cards for them.
