C. Look on the word lists in Appendices 1 and 2 (pages 303 and 308) for the words you
underlined. Choose five of your underlined words that are on the lists and write them
below. Then write the part of speech and the dictionary definition that best fits each word
as it is used in the passage

 Assumption : An assumption is something that you assume to be the case, even without
proof. For example, people might make the assumption that you're a nerd
if you wear glasses, even though that's not true. Or very nice.
 Malleable : A malleable metal is able to be pounded or pressed into various
shapes, and a malleable personality is capable of being changed or
trained. It's easier to learn when you're young and malleable.
 Devotion : commitment to some purpose
 Urge : force or impel in an indicated direction
 Psychology : Psychology refers to the study of human behavior and the human mind,
or the mental attitude of a group.
D. Write a new sentence for each word above. The sentences should show that you understand
the meaning of each word as it is used in the passage.
 Assumption : “your assumption that I would agree was unwarranted”
 Malleable : “malleable metals such as gold”
 Devotion : “the devotion of his time and wealth to science”
 Urge : “I urged him to finish his studies”
