showing high moral standards. Sport is supposed to be a fair activity with everyone having an equal opportunity to compete. There are three aspects that affect ethics in sport which are sportsmanship, gamesmanship and deviance. Sportsmanship – this involves behavior that shows fair play, respect for opponents and gracious behavior; whether winning or losing. • Playing within the rules and regulations. • Showing concern for others well-being, especially when they are injured or under stress. • And show good etiquette. Gamesmanship – the use of unethical, although often not illegal, methods to win or gain an advantage in sport. • Often gamesmanship is encouraged by coaches and sometimes reinforces the view that gamesmanship is a lever way of undermining your opponent – and gaining an advantage. Deviance – this involves human behavior that is against your society’s norms and values. In sport this is represented by behavior that is outside the sporting rules, regulations or laws. • Fighting or assaulting other players/fans. • Taking of performance-enhancing drugs. • Intentionally injuring an opponent (through modifying equipment, breaking the rules etc). These are the aspects of ethics in sports that serve as a standard of right and wrong that prescribe what players and coaches ought to do while playing a certain sport.
