Let’s Recap
1. Look at the following pictures and write whether the
containers are full, half full or empty.
a. b.

c. d.

2. Write 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the order of increasing capacity. 1 is

for the least and 4 for the most.

Measurement of Volume
The volume (or capacity) of an object is a measure of the
space occupied by that object.

You may not even know it, but you use capacity every day!
It's all around you - in the glass of milk you pour, the bin
you put your toys in, even in your bowl of cereal!

You decide to pour for

yourself, a nice glass
of chocolate milk!
Grabbing a glass and
the jug of milk, you
begin to pour - when
something on TV
catches your eye. You
keep pouring and
pouring until...splash!
There is milk all over
the counter!
What happened?
You just learned a lesson about capacity, or the quantity a
container can hold. There is a limit to how much milk will fit
in your glass, and if you try to go past that limit, the milk
will start to overflow!

Units for Measuring Volume
A litre is the most common unit for measuring
volume in the metric system.
Litre is written as 𝒍.

We measure large volumes in

kilolitres.
Kilolitre is written as 𝒌𝒍. Medicine glass Milk Carton
40 𝒎𝒍 1𝒍

We measure smaller volumes in millilitres.

Millilitre is written as 𝒎𝒍.

Instruments to measure volume

A graduated cylinder, also known as

a measuring cylinder or mixing
cylinder is a common piece of
laboratory equipment
used to measure the volume of a
liquid. It has a narrow cylindrical
shape. Each marked line on the
graduated cylinder represents the
amount of liquid that has been measured.

administering liquid medications

Measurement of volume in the kitchen

A measuring cup or a measuring jug is a kitchen
utensil used primarily to
measure the volume of
liquid or
solid cooking ingredients
such as flour and sugar,
especially for volumes from
about 50 ml
upwards.

Relation between a litre and a millilitre:
The millilitre ( symbol: 𝒎𝒍 ) is a unit of volume in
the metric system.

When a litre is divided into 1000 equal parts, each part

is equal to a millilitre. Or, we can say that there are 1000
millilitres in a litre.

When we collect 20 drops of water, we have

about 1 millilitre.

Remember,
1 𝒍 = 1000 𝒎𝒍

So, 3 𝒍 = 3 x 1000 𝒎𝒍 = 300 𝒎𝒍

7 𝒍 = 7 x 1000 𝒎𝒍 = 7000 𝒎𝒍

Example:
Convert 55 𝑙 90 𝑚𝑙 into 𝑚𝑙
1 𝑙 = 1000 𝑚𝑙
55 𝑙 90 𝑚𝑙 = (55 x 1000) 𝑚𝑙 + 90 𝑚𝑙
= 55000 𝑚𝑙 + 90 𝑚𝑙
= 55090 𝑚𝑙

Answer: 55 𝑙 90 𝑚𝑙 = 55090 𝑚𝑙

a. Rani has used two of the ingredients available as shown above.

Her smoothie measures 250 𝒎𝒍. What are the ingredients she
used?
b. What are the health benefits of Rani’s smoothie?

c. Annie has to use more than two ingredients. Her smoothie also
needs to measure exactly 250 ml. Which of the ingredients can she
choose? What are the vitamin contents in her smoothie?

d. Mini made a fruit smoothie using orange juice and watermelon

juice. What is the volume of the smoothie she made? What are its

Relation between a kilolitre and a litre:

The kilolitre (symbol: 𝒌𝒍) is a unit of volume in
the metric system, equal to one thousand litres;
kilo being the prefix for 1000.

When a kilolitre is divided into 1000 equal parts, each

part is equal to a litre. Or, we can say there are 1000
litres in a kilolitre.
Remember,
1 𝒌𝒍 = 1000 𝒍

So, 2 𝒌𝒍 = 2 x 1000 𝒍 = 2000 𝒍

10 𝒌𝒍 = 10 x 1000 𝒍 = 10000 𝒍 To fill one average
