Video Games vs. Outdoor games

Sources (Google images, 2020)

Games are important for children as they are fun, entertaining as well as important for their
development. However, today there is a shift from children’s traditional outdoor games which have so
much to offer in terms of physical and social activities, creativity, competition and camaraderie to games
using technological devices and gadgets. According to a review on the positive effects of video games
to be published by the American Psychological Association, video games, including violent shooter
games, may boost children’s learning, health and social skills. Strategic video games not only entertain
but also help develop problem solving skills which may have critical implications for education and
career development. Despite these positive implications, studies have shown that engaging in video
games can also lead to a range of negative impacts on the users such as addiction, depression and
aggression. (Adapted from Granic, I. 2013, “Video Games Play May Provide Learning, Health, Social
