World Retail Congress

The World Retail Congress, meeting in Berlin, has provided the critical context, new ideas and
challenging thinking for senior retailers to understand the “new retailing” that is about to emerge
from the global recession.  It was a 3 day conference wherein on the first day was the Retail
Futures Challenge 2010 followed by various sessions addressed by delegates coming from all
over the world and sharing their insights regarding and covering various aspects of the retail
industry.

It has been one of the most important gatherings of the world’s best retailers at a truly important
time for the industry.

RETAIL FUTURES CHALLENGE 2010

Retail students from the seven competing colleges in the Retail Futures Challenge presented
their inspirational ideas to Congress delegates on October 25 in Berlin.

Briefed to create a store concept that captured the essence of their home cities, the students
have worked to bring to life Store New York, Store London, Store Mumbai, Store Melbourne,
Store Hong Kong, Store Milan and Store Tokyo.

This truly global competition was designed to show the future talent that exists in the industry
supported business colleges in both the developed and the emerging markets. Each of the
teams were sponsored by retailers and brands to allow them to travel to Berlin and to compete
for the title.

STORE MUMBAI

“Mumbai Meri Jaan!,” is a restaurant that serves the delicacies of Mumbai. This Mumbaiya food
court offers delicious meals from the streets of Mumbai, where one can experience the true
spirit of the city. Right from Bollywood, to the Local Trains, the High Streets, to the Chowpatty2,
this food retail store is the place to uncover the secrets of Mumbai’s own style of dining. A food
court format that caters to its customers through different kiosks of live food preparation
counters offering snacks like Mumbai’s famous Vada Pav, Misal Pav, Samosa, and Poha, along
with wholesome meals like Pav Bhaji, Tawa Pulao3, and lots more.

A range of Mumbai’s fast food served all under one roof, with hygienic cooking practices, and an
interesting ambience, “Mumbai Meri Jaan!” is a fast food retail store.

The store concept keeps in mind the drivers of the city’s lifestyle and creates a unique
combination of all popular foods: Chaats, Street Snacks and the essence of Mumbai’s
entertainment: Bollywood.

Team Tokyo – Winners of the Retail Future Challenge

'Animation is creation' was the tagline for the T-shirt Nation concept presented by the
students from Rikkyo University in Tokyo. Building on the Japanese obsession with animation
and comics, the students proposed a store where customers could choose and personalise T-
shirts featuring their favourite animated characters. Customers would be able to share their
designs, and others would be able to buy them. At the same time multimedia content would be
available to download to customers' own mobile devices. The second European flagship store
would be located in Berlin, to capitalise on the popularity of Japanese animation in Germany.
