Mass Transfer-2 (CLL-352)

Tutorial #1

P1)
A gas mixture (N2 = 5%, H2 = 15%, NH3 = 76% and Ar = 4%)
flows through a pipe, 25.4 mm in diameter, at 4.05 bar total
pressure. If the velocities of the respective components are 0.03
m/s, 0.035 m/s, 0.03 m/s and 0.02 m/s, calculate the mass
average, molar average and volume average velocities of the
mixture.
P2)
Ammonia (A) diffuses through a stagnant layer of air (B), 1cm
thick, at 25⁰C and 1 atm total pressure. The partial pressure of
NH3 on the two sides of the air layer are pA0 = 0.9 atm and pAl =
0.1 atm respectively. Air is non- diffusing. Calculate (Given DAB
= 0.21 cm2/s),
a) The molar flux of NH3, w.r.t. stationary observer.
b) Molar and mass average velocities.
c) The molar average velocities w.r.t an observer moving with the
mass average velocity.
d) Prepare a plot of partial pressure distribution of NH3 and air
along the diffusion path.
