Mass Transfer-2 (CLL-352)

Tutorial #1

P1) Ammonia (A) diffuses through a stagnant layer of air (B), 1cm
thick, at 25⁰C and 1 atm total pressure. The partial pressure of
NH3 on the two sides of the air layer are pA0 = 0.9 atm and pAl =
0.1 atm respectively. Air is non- diffusing. Calculate (Given DAB
= 0.21 cm2/s),
a) The molar flux of NH3, w.r.t. stationary observer.
b) Molar and mass average velocities.
c) The molar average velocities w.r.t an observer moving with the
mass average velocity.
d) Prepare a plot of partial pressure distribution of NH3 and air
along the diffusion path.

P2) Two large vessels are connected by a tube 5 cm in diameter and

15 cm in length. Vessel-1 contains 80% N2 (A) and 20% O2 (B);
Vessel-2 contains 20% N2 (A) and 80% O2 (B).
The temperature is 20⁰C and the total pressure is 2 atm. Calculate
(Given DAB = 1.01 x 10-5 m2/s),
a) The steady state flux and the rate of transport of N2 from vessel-1
to vessel-2.
b) Find the same for O2.
c) The partial pressure of N2 and its gradient in the tube 0.05 m from
vessel-1.
d) The net mass flux w.r.t. a stationary observer.
