aid organisations in their pursuit of continual

METHODOLOGY
The BSI BenchMark methodology
utilises the management principles
and a management system maturity
matrix to evaluate progress of your
management system. This is
accomplished through a series of
steps explained later in this guide.

THE MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES

The BSI BenchMark methodology
evaluates the progress of an
organisation’s management system.
This is achieved by identifying,
measuring and reporting progress
within key specified elements of the
management principles identified
below:
• Customer focus
• Leadership
• Involvement of people
• Process approach
• Systematic approach to
management
• Continual improvement
• Factual approach to decision
making
• Mutually beneficial supplier
relationships
BENEFITS OF THE MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES

Customer Focus
Understanding current and future customer
needs, meeting customer requirements and
striving to exceed customer expectations should
all lead to increased company performance.

Leadership
Leaders who establish a unity of purpose and
direction for the organisation can create and
maintain the internal environment which can
empower people to become fully involved in
achieving the organisation’s objectives.

Involvement of People
People at all levels are the essence of an
organisation and their full involvement enables
their abilities to be used for the organisation’s
benefit.

Process Approach
A desired result is achieved more efficiently
when activities and related resources are
managed as a process.
Systematic Approach to Management
Identifying, understanding and managing
interrelated processes as a system contributes
to the organisation’s effectiveness and
efficiency in achieving objectives

Continual Improvement
Incorporating continual improvement of the
organisation’s overall performance as a
permanent objective of the organisation will
improve business performance.

Factual Approach to Decision Making

Effective decisions can be made if they are
based on the analysis of data and information

An organisation and its supplier are
interdependent and a mutually beneficial
relationship enhances the ability of both to
